just rebuilt my 22re .30mm over and wanted to know what kind of oil to use when breaking it in? can someone help me out???
My mechanic told me to use regular walmart oil. Its going to get changed anyways. He also specifically told me to not use synthetic oil, cause with that, the seals wont seat correctly and you might mess something else up. I think it was float a valve, but not completely sure. Thats what i was told though.
A rebuilt/new engine needs a oil with high zinc to be broken in. (flat tappet old school engines anyway) The cheapest route is to use rotella t truck oil. Available at walmart GM E.O.S. (engine oil supplement) is about 12 bucks a bottle IIRC. U would just add a bottle to whatever oil your running. Dont use mobile one to break in an engine. We found out the hard way and blew up a rebuilt 396 BBC in less than 30 minutes. If you do your research, it all began a few years ago when oil companies quietly removed the zinc from the oil. Modern roller motors dont really have a problem, but old flat tappet engines will waste the cam. (on a new cam/lifter set)
I used to run Mobil 1 10W-30 with Bosch filters when my dad was driving the truck. I've moved on to Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 and Purolator PureONE PL30001 filter.
I think Ive got 10 miles on my motor since Ive rebuilt it lol... I put 10w40 castrol in it... when will it be safe to do a oil change and when can I run mobil 1 synthetic... also what synthetic weight should I use and how long do you ride before changing synthetic ?!?
IIRC it's like 300-1k miles for break in and then you can switch over to synthetic... but yea, u must use mineral oil to break in... (regular oil, non synth.)
to be honest...and iv learned this and it is true no matter what anybody says.. iv worked for shell oil for 3 years and there is NO difference other than price and bs additives to make the color... cas, mobile, so on and on are the SAME! other than the sytn oils...weight is what matters.
Run a good quality oil! I use Castrol 20-50 in all our rides! 1988 Toyota truck went 196,000 before installing a LC Pro Street engine 1994 Corolla 299,648, runs great ,will see 300,000 by weeks end 1997 Mountaineer 182,00
All oil comes from the same place and can only be refined so much before it isn't oil and more. Even the additives are made in the places. The only difference is the way the additives are combined. The only additive that should be added to a high quality oil during break in is a specific additive for this purpose such as LUCAS Break-In Oil Additive TB ZINC-PLUS. This is my experiance with the cleanup of a neglected 1985 22r pick up with 385,000 miles on it. The previous owner "my girlfriends father changed the oil every 5k. I replaced the valve cover gasket just after buying the truck and found a serious amount of sludge. I used Rotella T for 8k or 2 oil changes because of the anti sut properties, shortly after the headgasket blew. My friend at the dealer offered to do it. After 20 minutes he came back to me and told me to warrenty the engine. I told him that it was the original 385k motor and he didn't believe me. He showed me the inside of the valve cover and it looked like brand new. After the head gasket I began using mobil 1 oil, after 10k my oil was at full and looked about as brown as regular oil. This continued until I sold it. My cousin owns two oil rigs in Texas and he said the best oil and filter to use is Casterol Edge and Purolator Pure One filters.
