Can you tune a carb so lean that it will hurt the engine? or will it just not run? Im going to try to tune my carb but im scared about hurting the engine....

ive hear lean it out till it idles up, turn idle down, lean it out till idles up, idle it down, then when it quits idling up from leaning it out its good...? I dont know.

ya you can be in the lean range and it will run hotter, misfire, and lack power. you want to be on the richer side with a carb, it will run smoother, idle colder and have a little bit more umph to the truck. I completly turn the idle screw all the way out, so its not effecting idle speed, then turn the fuel screw all the way in which is full lean, it should run like serious poo at that point. then slowly start unscrewing the mixture screw until it idles smooth. note that point, then keep going until it idles like crap again.. pick a place somewhere inbetween the rich idleing like poo and the super smooth place, then up the idle with the idle screw if needed.

The idle mixture screw is just that, idle mixture, it really does nothing other than control idle quality, you can lean it or richen it, but normally you adjust it to the best idle quality and highest manifold vacuum, once the throttle plates are cracked open the idle mixture is just along for the ride and have nothing to do with how rich or lean the engine is running, that is controlled mainly by the idle jets and the main jets, plus other things like emmulsion tubes, air correctors and so on. Your better off to adjust for best idle quality then start doing some plug reading after some hard pulls to see how the color is to dial in the jetting richer or leaner.

If thats so I shouldnt need to adjust anything because its the stock carb for the engine?

    I miss fuel injectors.

haha thats the only choice I have really. I think my ign timing is causing my power problems.

gotta start with the basics. messing with the carb with jacked up timing is a waste of time. you have to get your base timing set first before you tune your carb.

I think thats what my issue was, ign timing, I have it set at 7-10 degrees and it has pretty good power now.

but, when driving, it just starts revving up on its own and wont quit till you cut the engine off and turn it back on. Ill have to check all the hoses

    lol!

check your idle scew and mixture screws. I had mine set so rich that it would do that. If you touched the throttle it would just keep accelerating. I spent a good deal of time messing with my adjustments until I got the idle and fuel ratio where I liked it.

Try spraying the carb in and out, linkage, and down the speedo cable with carb clean.

Id like to check it when the problem is happening but the engine races so much im scared it will get hurt... the bracket that holds the linkage to the firewall isnt so hot, but who knows... Ill try to figure it out.

And lol me and my friends wanted to roll up to toyota and be like "recall"
