so ive got a 87 2wd and the PO removed the center leaf from the crimped pack and added 3in blocks so now my springs are pretty much de arched or might be. as it is right now the rear is way too soft and i get axle wrap pretty bad. for a cheap fix i was thinking of taking some old hilux leafs ive got lying about, say 3 leafs and cutting them down to fit between the coiled ends of the main leaf then stacking them on top of the main leaf. this is more to cure the axle wrap and add more drop then to cure load capacity, i'll add a flat hilux overload at the bottom to fix that. so essentially ill be making a 1.5in thick 3ftish long drop block that in my mind would spread the load so it cures or reduces axle wrap. $0.02? is there a better way to reduce axle wrap cheaply? there is a wheeler trick i know of: you weld a shock mount to the top center of the axle and the nearest forward xmem and mount a very stiff shock there. i dont think this will make a noticeable difference on a mini, on a wheeler the springs are supposed to be flexy and the traction loads are way higher, but there is no reason for flex on a mini. and if your still reading... has anybody flipped the main leaf to move the spring up(more drop)? is that safe?
wouldn't hurt to try but u'd need a long ass center bolt... i ran my truck with the overload spring on top of the main leaf with 3" blocks for a few months before i got some 4" blocks and it did make it a lil lower. if anything i'd try looking for stock toyota leaf springs at a junkyard or something... as far as flipping the main leaf, i wouldn't do it. i've seen it done on some nissan hardbodys and it does make the truck low but the ride will probably suck... hope this helps a lil
