I’m in search for some new wheels for the 78. But was wondering, what is the most backspacing I can have without the wheel touching any of the suspension components front and rear??
get a tape measure? lol Here's some pics I took of my 75 with two different wheels, to show clearance to the ball joint and suspension parts so I had an idea when looking for new wheels. Dunno the actual measurements, you can look up the specs on these wheels for more specifics: Mustang GT 'Starfish' wheels, 17x9: https://imgur.com/elVYdjX https://imgur.com/r82HKJ3 Jeep Cherokee 'Turbine' wheels, 15x8: https://imgur.com/sbkVur6 https://imgur.com/MPonZWU https://imgur.com/Lyk9ERG
Offset will depend on width. For reference, I test fit some 18x9 +40(ish) on 215/40/18 tires and they didnt touch any suspension component BUT the tire did rub the firewall. I also test fit some 15x8 with about a 5" backspace and those were more than fine but they poked out a good inch.
Pretty sure the offset is in the negative. Are you looking to tuck the wheels or have them poke out? If poke then just get whatever has a negative offset
Okay I’ll keep my eyes open. There isn’t as much Japanese wheels for these trucks huh? Being that it’s Toyota and all.
Hmm, I thought they were 8" wide, but could be 7" - I probably measured across the OD, not the ID where the tire sits There are tons of wheels that should fit these trucks - just find some in 5x114.3/4.5" lug pattern and go from there with offset/backspace.
So I actually had some time today to do some measurements, looks like 5.5 backspacing is the most you can go without hitting the strut. But don’t quote me lol it was a rough measurement
The only thing I hate about the 5x4.5 bolt pattern is a set of work equip or any or those 4 lug wheels would look good on these trucks.
I’m actually just gonna settle for a nice pair of steelies or centerlines for now, til I source a 5x114.3 jdm wheel one either 14inch or 15inch.
There are A LOT Of wheels with this bolt pattern. The bolt pattern is still used today on new cars. Just have to look
