I have a 1985 2wd longbed delux (22R) that now has a leak in the transmission output shaft seal where the sleeve yoke of the propeller shaft goes in. The shaft has nicks on it so I was thinking of installing a speedi-sleeve, but I am concerned that the sleeve yoke might move in and out, moving the sealing area of the speedi-sleeve passed the seal. Does anyone know if the propeller shaft moves that much that this would be a valid concern or not? Has anyone actually installed a speedi-sleeve in the location?
Ive never heard of a sleeve and seal for the driveshaft. But it wouldnt be anything strange. Have you thought about sanding the D/S? I usually rap the thing with emery cloth before I put one together. I would just slam in a new seal, polish up the yolk and then run it and see if it leaks...
I went to buy the speedi-sleeve and a new seal, but the seal they came out with was different than the one I bought a couple of weeks ago that leaked. Turns out there are three seals that could have been mine, and the first one they gave me was the loosest of them all. One of the three looked exactly like the one I removed, and fits nice and snug on the shaft, so I am going to try just installing the new seal and see if that was the problem. If it still leaks I will get the speedi-sleeve. Probably won't be until this weekend, but I will keep you posted.
OK, new (correct) seal installed, shaft put back in, and no leaks! No need for a speedi-sleeve! The seal that leaked had a flange on it that didn't allow it to go in very far, basically flush with the end. The correct seal went in about 1/4"-3/8". So either the seal rides far enough in to be away from the nicked area, or it just fits better, or both!
