Well I am looking at picking up a wrecked 1981 Toyota pickup for its 22R, 5-speed and disc brakes. Anybody do this engine swap? Will it fit? What do I do for motor mounts? Custom make mounts? Use stock rear end or swap to the 1981's? Do I need a custom driveshaft? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am just trying to get a feel for what it all would take to do this swap.

i did the swap into my 73 so it should be the same, take the engine, trans, trans mount, drive line from the 81.

you are going to have to custom make brackets for the engine 22r mounts to fit to, the 8rc and 22r ones are too long, they wont work in any combination. just use the rubber mounts from the 22r that way if you break a mount later you can get one for a 22r and dont have to hunt down an 8rc one.

you are going to have to move the trans xmember back a few inches and adapt the 22r trans mount to it. the drive lines should be the same but take the one out of the 81 just to make sure.

you are going to have to run an electric fan, the 22r's fan clutch wont fit ( well atleast in my 73, this is going to be a judgment thing for ya )

get the ignitor and coil from the 81 cause the 71's system is not going to work.

you will need the balljoints, spindle, break rotor, caliper for the swap and you will need to mount the left on the right and right on the left since the 71 is rear steer and the 81 is front, other then that though the rest of the breaking system should fit.

thats all i can remember off the top of my head, im sure someone will chime in if there is something im forgetting.

EDIT: you are going to have to pull the entire exhaust off the 81, or atleast the part right off the header cause the 71s is the wrong size. I just had one custom done from the header back.

also you will need the alternator off the 71 and have to make it fit onto the 22r motor, i used the bracket from the 71 and 2 bolts with nuts to hold the bottom in since neither the 22r or 8rc lower mount bolt would work for me. I had to install mine out of the car cause the motor mount when installed in mine was in the way of getting the back bolt in the bottom mount of my "custom" alt install.

its not horrible, i also forgot you might have to re-cut your shifter hole too. i put a w58 trans in with a really long shift neck, depending on the trans you do you might only have to trim the hole.

    good luck !

if its anything like my 74 18rc to 22r swap, you might get lucky with 75 eng mount bracket, both the block and frame side if you've got it.

i got lucky with my corona and had bolt in goodness with epic fitment. but i also found the "white unicorn" for my particular need, what are the odds ill find a corona wagon in a junkyard that is only a few months older then mine and has a 20r...

but the 18r and 8r are the same lookin block, the brackets i got were quite different from standard 2Xr brackets. if i have pics of em they would be in the build thread for my wagon somewhere, if there arnt, let me know its right outside.
