my 1989 pickup that i just bought for 100 bucks idels like crap when i first start it. once i give it gass it does fine but is ideled up really high.also does anyone know how to check codes without a computer to check them?
there sould be the toyota OBD1 sensor underneath the hood by the fuse box. Should say something along the lines of (Data connector) or something. If you dont have a toyota OBD1 scanner take a paper clip and jump the terminals, the check engine light should flash 2 seperate times if im correct. The light should flash idk... like a few times then pause then a few more times, so if it flashes 4 times pauses then 1 time your code is 4-1 then you have to look it up. Alot of the time if you call a toyota dealer and say that your part of some body shop and you need to know the description of this code they will tell you for free. At least thats what I do. Hope that helps!
Start with the basics on finding the problem. start with checking vacuum lines and inspecting connections, old fuel lines leading to the carb. how old is the carb? has it been rebuilt? when is the last time it had a tune-up. check the spark plugs and the gap. do all the free inspections first. To check for codes get a piece of wire and jump the diagnosis box from pin T1 to E1 with the ignition in the on position. if you get a consistent flash then all systems are ok. but if you get pauses then you have a problem. Keep us posted and give a little more info and details about the issue.
