Hey there guys im new to this forum and thought about introducing myself here... Im 18 and recently bought myself a 84 toyota pick up/hilux single cab. i bought this truck as a project and ive always loved trucks in general. i have many people talking smack about it that i bought myself a piece of junk but oh well for me this is a project that will only improve with time. let me know what you guys think and tips and ideas will be considered... and heres a before and after picture of when i bought this truck a few weeks ago and how it sits now
very cool little Truck, also hang on to those OG Blue and yellow Plates.......it doesnt matter what others thing as long as you enjoy it!
I like it! You've come to the right place for tips/ideas. This site is very active w/cool peeps and info. Welcome
Welcome & thanks for the introduction! Where in CA do you live? The truck has a lot of potential. What are some of your short-term plans? Rick
yea i loved that it had those OG blue and yellow plates, ima get those restored to look clean it seems like the previous owner was finger painting them ...but thanks guys i appreciate it and exactly haters gunna hate... and well at the time im unemployed looking for a job but once i have some sort of income coming in i plan on swapping the engine because this one runs like crap. it gets me from point a to point b but it sounds horrible so the engine will be swapped, and i plan on going straight pipe on it with a dc sports muffler at the tip and maybe drop it 1" more... and i stay in Norwalk CA
What's great about these rides is it doesn't take as much income as it does time and effort to make them better. If the engine runs like crap, sounds worse, but gets you from A to B then its probably much less severe than a motor swap...and it looks good! Nothing a little clay bar, wax and polish won't improve! A good days worth of detail and...well good luck!
by sounds like crap u mean engine tick tick ??? could be the valves need adjustment or u have a bad header gasket i have those with mine
Ruf running motor ? When u get some funds in . Try changing the plugs and cap wires PVC valve spray some carb cleaner down the carb < will be hard to start for a bit after that . These motors can take some mileage and abuse . A lot of times it's the factory carb that that goes bad and what seems like a turd motor in most cases is just a worn out carb
well the engine makes a ticking noise and miss fires like crazy, the truck doesnt idle anymore i have to stay on the gas to keep it on (i have understood that the idle is a result of the bad carb?) and the mileage reads 259999 but the reader doesnt work so i have no idea on the actual mileage but i know these engines will last forever. the only reason i plan on swapping out the engine is because the guy i bought it from must have not taken care of it, there's a few things missing from the engine bay, from the head down its all soaked in motor oil so its leaking i just cant seem to find the were exactly it leaks from... he had said that he had done a head job on it and changed all the seals and gaskets on it but i doubt he actually did that or if he did he did a half ass job on it. there's also miscellaneous bolts and screws sticking out of random spots, it seems like he stuck any bolt in as long as the tread was good (im hispanic my self but in this case i must say im very disappointed in my kind when it came to this vehicle, the wiring on the interior was held on by regular clear tape... they seem to find a easy way out of doing things right that only makes things worse... not cool ) but yea so i figure to save me the hassle of figuring all of this out that i would just swap out the engine with a freshly rebuilt one that way i know what im working with, i was thinking of swapping it with another 22r or the 22rte just to get something still factory but pushing more horsepower... not looking for crazy horsepower just something a lil more
Well sounds like you got an idea of we're you wanna go with it . Good thing about these trucks motors and wiring is fairly simple I don't recall we're the idle up screw is on the factory carb < another member could help there . As far as a rebuild or replacment and cost wise using a 22r will be your best they can make decent power for a fairly light truck . these blocks are tuff you could easily rebuild your bottom end and slap on a new head from engnbldr or many other sources Add a new timing set and oil pump A weber carb also eliminates the rats nest of vacuum lines wich can is a big plus
hmm not bad i might just do that and upgrade the 22r, but yea im shooting more towards just replacing the whole engine and work my way through there.... And Russian why do you say stay away from the 22rte? ill take your word for it cuz i dont want to find myself stuck with problems but i just want to hear some reasons why its a major headache?
The 22rte is Toyota's attempt at a fuel injected turbo. That motor was known for drivability problems.
