Hello all. I'm new to this site and is a total newbie (currently trying to learn) when it comes to engine swapping and is even more of a newbie when it comes to advance technical engine stuff. My stock 22R motor had given up on me a weeks ago @ 490,XXX miles (don't know it seems about right at this mileage or if it crapped out too soon). I was planning to junk it but my friend brought it to my attention that I should throw in a Chevy 350 motor. He said my stock Toyota axle and transmission and stuff, may need to be converted. It didn't seem like know what he was talking about so I asked around. It turns out I can, in fact, install a 350 motor (of course along with all the modification). However, I've been liking the 2JZ motor for a long time now. Seen plenty those in Supra's, ripping all kind of stuff up. Anywho, I don't know much about both engine. Which is why I'm here; to seek your advice/expertise. So, A 2JZ or a 350 in my '82 Toyota truck? What kind of modification or conversion am I expected to do and how much should I be looking to spend (per setup)? How hard are the conversions? I've been reading up on 2JZ motors. I've learn there's many: 2JZ, 2JZGE, 2JZ-GE, 2JZGTE, 2JZ-GTE, and Twin Turbos and such. Are they all the same and people just call it differently or is there, in fact, a difference in each motor? Lastly, which has the best end results, as far as performance, ease of upgrading, availability of parts, etc.. Sorry for the 1,000 questions. Like I said, I'm a total newbie and is in the learning process. Just trying to resurrect my Toyota truck. I know there's lots of intelligent individuals on here, so please let me know. Thanks a bunch.
Whats your budget? Do you want manual or automatic? What are your goals for this truck? Daily driver, drag only? How much power do you want? Fill me in so I can answer your questions fully. The 2jz is a great engine, but so is the chevy 350. 2jz is heavier but has forged internals from the factory and is very balanced and you dont have to upgrade any internals for up to 800hp or so. chevy 350 is lighter, has a good amount of power and will be nicer on the wallet. The lexus 4.0 1uz v8 is a great choice too and you can get them complete with transmission for around 700 bucks!
Well, that's the thing, I really have no preference and do not know what to expect out of it. My engine is dead and I need to replace it. I was thinking since I'm going to replace it anyways, might as well go high performance. I don't race at all but every once in a while, I do have the need for speed. My budget is anything under $8000. It is going to be a daily driver. I'm more into show rather than race. Thanks and sorry for all the newbie question/answers.
