got a 20r head for free, but was wondering if i needed to do any special mods to my block. i also got a free motor and the guy didnt know weather it was out of his 84 truck or his 87. it does have dome style pistons. so the question really how do i tell what year block do i have? any help on this would be great!

Definately check the deck height. This will tell you if it is a early 22R or a later 22R. 20R heads will not mate up with a later 22R block.

You have an early block. The 20R head will bolt on fine with no problems.

and not do be a dick, but you can make the 20R heads match up to the later blocks, there is a write up on here somewhere on how to do it. pretty simple actually
