I'd like to swap out my 18R motor from my 72' Mark II wagon for a 20R. Note, if you own a HiLux of the same year, or any other year truck with an 18R, and you plan to do a swap - this thread will apply to you, too. What I'm trying to figure out is what original parts will I still be able to use in the swap, and what parts will have to go in place of 20R compliant parts.? This is not counting the intake, exhaust, and carb. I'm considering all those things a part of the motor. Also, being a 72', it's smog exempt here in California, so that means the vacuum lines you'd normally see on a 20R carb will no longer be necessary. At least most. Seriously considering going with a 32/36 Weber to just keep it as simple as possible. So what do I do with the vac lines that are no longer being used? I was under the assumption a lot of these vac lines were part of the overall operation of the vehicle. What vac lines (will) still be utilized? To kind of space out my spending, I'm considering temp. keeping the automatic tranny I have. Note, it's the original tranny from 72', so will this just be a "bolt-on" with the 20R? Can I still use the same torque converter? What about the ignition system, will this still stay the same or have to be replaced? Starter and whatnot? Assuming I go to a 5speed: I understand that I can go to the salvage yard and pull a clutch assembly from another Toyota, but do I also take the plumbing or do I have to do new plumbing? I'm assuming I'll need a new slave, new clutch master cylinder.
the vac lines for the stock carb should actually stay. IF your going to use the stock carb. i find that the stocker hates to be F'd with by removing the vac lines, and never seems to want to run perfect. id go to a weber, then you only need the vac advance, breather/pcv, and brake booster line. i believe that you can bolt up the 18r flex plate to a 20r, but i would verify that over at www.classic-celica.com or www.1stgencelica.com. i know the tranny will bolt up but not sure about the flex plate. as for a 5 speed swap, you take everything including the lines from a donor car. but read my wagon thread and make sure you have the proper bolt holes inside for the pedal assembly.
