Check this out. The bearings are off-set. I have been talking with Ted at engnbldr and he has been great on trying to give me advice, but I can't get pics to him for some reason thru e-mail. I have sent him an e-mail letting him know I have it posted here. Is this acceptable? Larry
I was referring to how the bearings were offset. If you are saying that is normal. That is what I'm asking, yes The second set of pics were posted in case there were any questions asked in reference to the rods.
OK, thought you were reffering to the bearing tang slots, the bearing width offset is pretty common also, nothing to worry about.
WHEW ,,, Big Time. Guys I have been freaking out over this. Part of my problem I guess is when i get my block back from the machine shop it was filthy,, i mean black loose burnt oil in crevices, if you want to keep ur hands clean you prob should not touch it.. even where the oil filter mounts i can dig crud with my bare finger..the top of the block still had the headgasket marks on it......... so I kinda second guessing everything. But thanks, I'll be able to fall asleep tonight not worrying about this at least
If thats the kind of work that machine shop turns out, the cleanliness would be the least of my worries, chances are their machining is just as sloopy. Good luck.
Thats what i'm concerned about. I'm considering taking it to another shop and have it checked. In my line of work I come across so many dishonest people, when I see or hear of stuff like this I automatically become leary of them. It could be an oversight, but they machined it like this too. I was fine till I started noticing the shoddy cleaning it was given. Now I dont feel comfortable. 30 minutes in a hot cleaning tank (how he told me they do it) I would not think there would be any black oily crud left on it. Unless I'm expecting too much.
I'd ask your next machine shop about the rod. I think it'd be OK but I'm not an expert there. 30 minutes in any cleaning situation, whether it's in a hot-tank, oven/beadblaster, or 10 y/o slave labor with a toothbrush will NOT have crap all over. we have an oven that sometimes works and a beadblaster. usually 20-30 mins in the oven and as much in the blaster and it looks like this (and I left mine in probably 3x longer than it needed): 90 Cressida :: 0125001435a.jpg picture by kamesama980 - Photobucket
Heck,, mine didnt have to look that good. But I would think it would not have old oil still on it. Hell, the freeze plugs were still in it. I am no engine builder, but I have had a couple blocks machined during my lifetime and have never seen this. I mean, If I'm expecting too much, somebody please let me know. Seriously
Block pics Here is what I got back from the machine shop... It was loaded up while I was inside and my father covered it for the ride back home,,, It's supposed to be a reputable shop.
What were they supposed to do to the block exactly/what did you pay for them to do? I wonder if they know there's supposed to be some sort of solvent in the hot tank with the water? I supposed if they just have a cheap one or it wasn't up to temp maybe.... -bad job honing the cylinders, the brush marks should be smooth and even all the way up and down, not part way then change pattern. -looks like the HG surface was done with steel wool or sandpaper. -timing cover surface and oil filter gasket surface looks like steel wool/sandpaper again. I got a better looking deck surface on my last 7M BHG with razor blades and a $10 palm sander...
I paid for a block cleaning. I am not happy with it. I went by there today and he apologized for it all, said he will take care of it. We'll see
I have had several blocks cleaned over the years, none Toyota, and the worst have ever gotten back was a little surface rust on the side of the block, (bare metal exposed, nothing more). I have always hade blocks cleaned when machined. Never really heard of a shop not cleaning one prior to doing thier work. But yeah it should look better than that.
wow... I wouldn't go back myself... I've had several heads reworked and none have looked like I could have done better on my gravel driveway drunk.... Good luck with them fixing it. kame posted a good pick of what it should be coming back especially if you paid specifically for cleaning ... if nothing was paid I could understand the outside like it is( and ONLY the outside).
Yeah, the pic he posted was a excellent example of how to clean a block. Although I was not expecting a show quality piece, I did expect it not to have oil on it. We'll see.. He told me he will make it right because he wanted me to come back. And if he makes it right I might consider it. I have had a few small businesses of my own and I know all too well what employees can do to your business.
