Ok, so months ago when it was still warm I painted all of the metal on the console (ashtray, glove box, and such), but now I decided to go with a more stock look and keep the all black. What is the best way to remove Rustoleum enamel without all the elbow grease? BTW, does anyone have a good picture of their console? I don't even remember what color it was?
mine was a gun metal grey... just prime and paint over it...then maybe sand through the new paint for that "patina" look
yea i wouldn't remove the old paint it looks to be in good condition, i agree will dill scuff, prime, scuff and paint. It'll look like new again if you try to just remove the brown it will not bring the original finish back you will end up taking off original too
ok, in the back of my head i thought so too.... the hard part is going to be finding a good color. i don't want it to be jet black glossy or look like "oh you painted it" like the current...just natural. dillinja had it right with that greyish patina look... now i remember. almost like anodized aluminum. how would i go about that? if i sanded, would that just show brown again?
yea, i might need to put down like a silver coat then a flat black. idk. i just painted my cluster and radio/instrument panel and it looks amazing, but that was just black vinyl paint.
they make flat and satin spray bombs if you want to sort through all the colors at Lowes but if your spraying it with base and clear i say get a mixed color (should be listed on the mfg sticker) and go with a satin or flat clear.
if you dont have an air gun., here is the next best thing. they cost 4 bucks and you can mix and thin your own paint, any finish you want. What Is Preval? | Preval
I would do a flat gun metal grey then barely sand through on the edges of stuff until the brown comes through a lil. Give it the "aged" look.
thanks guys. what i think i'll do is go to my local yard and grab the glove box cover and test on some scrap metal to see what'll look best. i want to paint my door seals (top left of photo) black as well as the door pull and escutcheon plate. The truck was as shown originally yellow, the previous owner went all rattle can on it. Hopefully in spring, I'll have the truck redone in Olive. That brings me to my next question: when i decide i want to paint it the Toyota 637 Olive the earlier trucks had as an option, do i just go to like Sherwin Williams and tell them I want this color? Or do I have to go to a Toyota Dealer for more info on the color?
Hahahahahha. Go in to the paintshop and tell them you want 1976 Toyota Olive green paint code 637. I can imagine the looks you might get. Go for it though.
I'll put money on it that the paint shop would have it long before a dealer would. The paint shop only needs the pigments to mix it. And I don't mean some cheezy house paint store....a real Auto Paint Supply.
ranger, thanks for the pic! i'm sure i can find a color i'd like somewhere close. question though: should i sand the gloss off the brown before priming, or just prime on top of it?
where did you get that trans hump cup holder thing?!?! thats exactly what i need to solve my no cupholder problem. what was toyota thinking when they made these without cupholders?
