thats the problem, i live in eastern ky...no junkyard anywhere near me would have one i would almost bet on it, there is virtually no toyotas from this era here...
Are you looking specifically for a W58, or just a 5-speed? A w50 is a direct swap in 5-speed because they came with them. W58's are going to be more expensive and harder to come by. also, you have to have the driveshaft shortened, the relocated the mount rearwards. Only real advantages a W58 has over W50 is the 5th gear (.750 vs. .853) and the fact it can take more torque. If you're running the stock 22r you're not going to overwhelm a W50. Depends on what you're going for. You can find a W50 in almost all mid 70's to early 80's PUs and Celicas with a 5-speed. I found this on CL: http://huntington.craigslist.org/pts/2024269393.html - you could see if his 2wd is a 5-speed, that would be a W56, easier swap.
thanks alot, i'm actually interested in the higher gears....my truck is 5spd, and considering i'm very happy with the engine performance after reading about the w58 i became interested in it because i thought it would give me taller gears? does that help? this info is really helping, i appreciate it....
This is from memory, so it's pretty good but not gospel. If you're looking for it for the '82 in your sig, you'll need a driveshaft. AFAIK the MKIII supra was the first car to use the 58 and it started the same year they changed slipyoke styles on he output shaft. W58s can be found in: MKII supra - may have W57 or 58, found that out the hard way. has mid-forward shifter location (close to my '91 truck). driveshaft might be the same MKIII supra NA - just swap your bellhousing and if I'm right ^ custom driveshaft. It's got the rearmost integral housing: might have to swap shifter housings... not sure where the 82 has it) MKIV supra non-turbo - swap bellhousings. shifter is mounted on an extended bracket...definitely needs to be swapped. tranny mount is different bolt pattern too so you'll have to swap rear housings SC300 - identical to MKIV tranny IS300 - won't work: input shaft is a different length due to the IS using a dual mass flywheel JZ engined cars will run almost double the price but are stronger (look for steel center plate) not that it's really needed since the AL center plate's supposed to be good for over 300 hp
I take it you have an L45. (mine was a L40 swap years ago). Stuff Ive found out, so no offense to anyone... The w50s a tough bastard. But it is a heavy heavy SOB that wont gain you anything as far as gas mileage. The W58 doesnt need a different driveshaft. The rear mount needs a little modding, a hammer and a drill can fix it. A W58 from a 22RE powered celica (like a 82-86) is the easiest drop in. (no cutting) A W58 from a 5MGE celica supra only needs a bellhousing. These are tons more common then the celica W58 IMO. (the bell can be sourced off of any W58,W55,W56 to a 22R/E transmission). Inc 4wd's. A W58 from a 7MGE supra will need a bellhousing, and the floor cut because the shifter sits ~3 inches back. (This is my current setup. I LUV the shifter location) And a W58 off of a 2JZ is even farther back. Swapping "shifters" to get a different location is practically impossible. BYE can vouch. A W58 really needs a deep rear end ratio. Right now, 245/50ZR16 tires, W58 in fifth gear is 2400-2500 RPMs at 73ish. Sounds good, but it bogs my motor. Ive blown up a W58. Loosened up a CHERRY L40 to the point where its about to explode. Havnt run the W50 on my motor yet, but I bet itll hold, for a while. Look for low mileage transmissions. Its tough, but itll "sound" better, especially in fifth, or coasting in neutral. Your speedo's gunna be off. I havnt figured it out yet, but at ^ said 73mph, speedos turning 55MPH. And a W58 is an easy 50-70 lbs lighter than that W50.
I can't wait to install the w58 w/ the 2rz motor Raff. I am going to love that longer 1st gear especially with my turbo setup coming up. Hey Raff I have a question for you. Check your pm! THanks
Love my w58, cept I got super tall gears, I'm running 307s cause I drive freeway mostly. Does bog in low rpms but you get used to the shift pattern.
okay. i'm down with where i can get one and what to look for, this kind of confused me.... raffaelli "A W58 really needs a deep rear end ratio. Depending what rear gear you have, you could always just swap that out. I have 4:10's in my SR5, and I'd love to get my hands on a 3:42 when I get the money for it. If you're in the same boat that will make a HUGE difference, 3000rpm vs 2400rpm at 60mph in 5th. If you go for something not quite as tall you'll get results too, depends on how stout your motor is, if you're a little down on power swapping to 3:42s will make it slower, plus your towing or hauling will suffer. But if you've already got 3:42s, the only place to go is 3:07s or a W58. Just another option.
In fifth gear, say cruising 65 mph. If I wanted to mash the gas an take off, the engine makes a lot of noise, but doesnt hardly pull the truck to faster rpms.(It will, but takes too much time and needs too much throttle). I can downshift into third, second if I really want to go, and start rowing the gears as I take off then. Fourth pulls fine. Its just the way my setup is. Ive sacrificed a little low end torque for a lotta top end horsepower. The motor is all fine and dandy ready to fight at 3000 rpms and up. But below 3000 rpms it just doesnt have the torque. Hense the need for a lower R&P ratio. --But ive gotten it up to over 100mph and had lots of gear/power to go-- I doubt with a strong running stock 22R youll have this problem. And FYI- When I was rock stock with a 4 speed. I got like 32-33mpgs. When I changed to a W58 (first mod), the gas mileage went down to about 28-30. Its hard to beat a toyota engineer at their game.
my motor is really strong but now i have some reservations about this swap. my rear end came from the factory on my truck...it has never been modified, therefore my r&p ratio is stock...i'm going to have to research it a lot more i need to upload you all some videos, and show yall what you've forgot about what a stock setup can do for you hahaa....i'll do that today can i post a video like the big pic above? we'll see i'll try to figure it out
I don't think you'd be able to use anything but the transmission itself, maybe the shifter. I think everything else is Supra. I think Raff would know better, don't take my word for it... I thought the W58 swap would be harder than it actually is!
it was already stated its more truble than its work to use anything other than a 82-85 celica or 82-86 celica supra trans thats basicly what your going to need try car-part.com or celica_gts.com or celicasupra.com
yea, i got what it needs to be from, just trying to find one....celica_gts.com site is bogus i'm gonna try to do my best, anyone seen my new pics? http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/build-up-project-threads-21/my-82-2wd-pickup-7988/index3.html
