ok so my truck runs fine... starting it is the hard part... I have to either push start it or be lazy and tie it to the titan and drag it which works pretty awesome. anyways.. I think theres a problem... starter is brand new.. I bought it a year ago and just now installed it with my new motor... anyways when I turn my key on to acc the starter ?trigger? wire is hot, like im trying to turn the motor over, but im not and it doesnt turn over even when I try to start it.. SO i put a starter switch, 12 volt switch to the starter... works great but turns the motor over SUPER SLOWWWW like only a tiny bit faster then if you turned it over with a 1/2 and 19mm socket.... but with spark plugs out it spins with ease... too much compression ? starter bad ? starter not getting enough juice ??!!!??!? also my battery is brand new... I even had walmart charge it for a hour today and they said good... so should I run zero gauge from my battery to starter ?!? or what could it be ?!?! I had a bad ground issue but assume I got it fixed, could having a bad ground make this happen ? like good enough for it not to just click and bad enough to make it hardly work ? also today my truck just randomly died, it runs but out of no where spark just stops it doesnt studder, it just shuts off completely... wtffff other then that its a wild banshee and runs great.
Bro, check all the fuses, battery terminals and grounds... The switch wire shouldn't be getting hot, something is grounding... Never experienced this firt hand btw....
seams like im the first to break everything lol. how do i check this... thinkin about putting another starter on tomorrow... also just remember for some reason my corner lights were on when my ignition was on today but then it turned off ?!
id say try out another starter... had a prob like this n thought my batt was dead... plugged a charger to it n it still wouldnt crank good.. turned suuuper slow! anyways i swapped the starter n never had that prob again!
I bet your bad ground problem fried the starter. Too much resistance in the circuit cooks the windings like hot dogs.
this!^^^^^^^ hook a jumper cable from the negative on the battery back to the motor anywhere. they try to start it again... see if that helps. you might have smoked the starter too but if it cranks better you know your first problem.
sounds to me your "ground problem" was a short, that fried your ignition switch. the trigger wire gets juice striaght from the switch and should not be hot unless you turn it there. or you have the oil sensor wire hooked to the starter, it does come on hot with the key. if its turning slow with the bypassed starter switch you installed id suspect your grounds arent good enuff and most likely your main pos wire from batt to starter is bad or a shotty connection. may also want to check that the mating surface of the starter is clean so it gets a good ground.
your last statement probably solved my problem, I think I painted that part when I painted my motor... Ill have to check that out.. I was wondering where the starter is grounded too... also I dont think my ignition is fried... how can I trace the wire that is supposed to go to the started to my ignition ? or the other way around, I deleted my oil pressure light since I have a oil psi gauge... and there were two wires identical and one came out of the plug so idk, maybe go from there after I fix the ground issues
ya take both wires to from that loom. turn key to "on" use test light, your looking for the "dead" wire. now have somebody turn the key to "start" with the test light on the dead wire, should light up. basically your looking for a "dead with key off or on" wire, and it should light up by turning to "start" only one wire on the whole truck will be like that. i should note that you have a newer truck then im used to, and you may have a starter relay but i dont think so. the solinoid acts as one on the older trucks and you have the same starter. and on the ground tip: if you painted the flywheel cover, did you take the motor mount brackets off the block and paint them too? if so, move your ground to the block not the bracket.
shonuff, your the man.. when im rich and famous one day ill remember to look u up for saving me headaches, along with a few other members here. sure enuff i did paint the dust sheild anyways a scotc brite pad took care of that in 2 minutes... and on top of that my ground was still pretty bad and it wouldnt crank over, so I added a ground from the head to the neg on the battery and now she starts in less then a full key click...
