Does the fluid condition determine how the transmission shifts from Park/Neutral to Drive/ Reverse?

My truck shut off when i put it into reverse.....

checked timing, the mark is clearly visible, very consistent, idle is estimated around 900rpm's.

Truck ran perfectly fine. Valves seem to have the usual tick (will adjust this weekend.... hope it clears up some problems)

So back to original question, does ATF determine how the motor shifts into gear from Park/Neutral to Drive/ Reverse?

eh, personally, its been at least over a year's worth of transmission abuse, manually shifting it and what not lol.

Try changing the tranny filter... And yes fluid condition affects automatics in general...

I plan to get Dexron II (which is what the truck uses, FSM states this.)
Then I will jack it up after a drive, drain the transmission, drop the pan, and replace the filter.

I read the FSM, but I don't see anything for the A43D having a filter, which is my concern. It states there is a strainer though.

After that, I'll have to fill it up. Give myself about a few days ( I drive alot), and then I was thinking that I should cycle the fluid..

the A43D takes about 6quarts of ATF.
I was thinking about doing a post-drop-pan flush.
My theoretical method was to do this after a drive (warm trans.)
The cooler lines to the radiator has two lines.
I was thinking about removing it from the output line of the radiator. The radiator line drains into the bucket as the return line sucks in new ATF fluid.

Does this seem reasonable and good?

I need to change this fluid ASAP. a blown transmission wont be good..

I drained and filled 2Qts out of my transmission. truck ran better on the road, but there's still old fluid of course.

After a lengthy drive around town, got home, and did that thing where I went from Neutral to Drive/ Reverse and it shut off the motor..

the engagement is a hard shudder and the motor shuts off...

This week, I'll do another drain and fill, and then once more to use the last of my atf bottles.

the fluid I got from my truck today was the color of used motor oil...
