Truck wont start, help a Newb I just bought a 89 2wd 22re reg auto Toyota for next to nothing. Hasnt been started in a year. When you put a new battery in it you get full power to dash and lights, but only get a click when you try to start. I am assuming it is the starter, but dont know what to check first. I dont want to take it off unless i need to (im a big guy, dont fit under trucks well). any suggestions?
only thing that comes to mind is the neutral safety switch, or the trigger wire for the starter is sending a weak signal.
check for corrosion. toyotas have finicky starter relays and solenoids. and, it should fit out the top easier than the bottom. hopefully that helps.
You could also check the thermostat which is on the intake manifold side of the engine. It could be stuck closed. But I'm not sure if this would prevent starting.
