That is actually quite depressing to hear that things are turning that way...but then again how many people actually know how to weld these days? I'm not going to critique anyone's welding, even though I do in my line of work but mostly because I myself am still learning the art of welding. It isn't easy to do and it is definitely something that takes some time to learn.

But seriously....how bad does a weld have to be to be classified as bubble gum?

 seems like not many! i give weld tests to potential hires frequently. the first test is if they now what amperage is needed for a particular application. then they have to weld mild steel in overhead, vertical up, and horizontal using stick, as well as mig. then they have to succesfully weld aluminum with the mig spoolgun, even if they have never tried before because we are always welding aluminum. we don't require them to tig weld at hire, but they have to learn as soon as possible.

what really bothers me about amatuer welders is seeing vertical down welds. if a potential hire even tries to start in the vertical down position i stop them and tell them to leave. and its scary that most of those people have been employed as welders for most of their careers.

these are the "bubblegum" welds that the previous owner had on the axle of my 86.... like i mentioned earlier, a claw hammer knocked them right off.

I swear that looked like a single pass, and I won't even asked if it even had any penetration if you knocked it off with a claw hammer. Of course I won't lie, that "bubble gum" looked like my first attempt at welding last weekend. :runaway:

Bernie you mean people actually try and start from the top on a vertical weld? Your supposted to start from the bottom right and let the slag fill in as you go up right?

And my teacher never really taught me how to set the temp when welding. I know it depends on what your welding and thickness. Most i figured out was if its popping and those "berry" things are flying everywhere its to hot. I think most times we kept it on 175.
