Haha, yeah, I just see putting all this time in to prep it and paint it and bake it right, and then having it slam right into the heater pipes coming out of the firewall when I stab the engine back in.

We'll see how bored I get waiting for these foeged pistons to come in.

I got the pistons in yesterday. They are beautiful looking, as well as extremely light. I can't wait to start putting things together.
Took the Flex-Hone to the cylinders this morning. The back of the 3rd cylinder and the front of the 4th cylinder look like they have some roughness still. Probably means the head gasket leak was between those 2 cylinders. I was using a 240 grid hone, so I ordered a 180 to bust that down, and then polish it back up with the 240.
The front two cylinders look quite nice after the hone!
Now it is a waiting game again until the new hone comes in. Maybe time to paint the valve cover.

The wrinkle paint came out looking so good, I'm quite pleased with the reaults.

Today was my last day working a seasonal warehouse gig at Best Buy, so I decided to put my last chance at employee dis ount to use. Ordered a Pioneer double din. Now i'll be able to integrate it with my phone for GPS, music, and may e some day a dashcam or backup cam.

Haha, I had to go back a while to find your pictures, but heck yes! Mine is a 22r valve cover because I hated the 22RE boxiness. It also gives me enough room to fit the ARP Studs.

I love that hybrid sticker you have. I'm trying to find a 22rte sticker for mine, I hear Etsy is the place to find them.

I've always liked a sanded or polished valve cover on these motors. You do have to fight oxidation but I haven't been having it to bad on my stuff.

Oh yeah, maybe it is a 20R cover. Whatever it is, it is way cooler!

I found a 22R-TE valve cover sticker on Etsy... then I found all of the 22R-TE stickers for the fuse box, emissions, vac lines, turbo warnings; shit this is too much! Haha

Valve cover is aluminum, it shouldn't be oxidizing. And i completely agree that your engine looks gorgeous with the raw valve cover! Mine has the blacl hot pipe and the air box and all the black emissions hoses on it, so the painted valve cover blends in nicely.

Aluminum still oxidizes, but its more of a white substance than the traditional rust we are used to seeing

You get a white powder like film when it's exposed. Even coolant will cause it to do it. Seems like raw aluminum is worse then sanded or polished.

Jay Leno has a famous case of aluminum corrosion.

maybe it is a semantic debate of terminology, but sanded and polished aluminum both sound "raw" to me.

I have heard of aluminum oxidation (why people anodize), but have never experienced it... maybe luck?

This was just from my experience. I sprayed coolant all over my bay and the raw intake manifold started having spots within a few days. While the polished and sanded stuff was fine.

    Iiinteresting.

Now I wonder... was spraying coolant all over your engine bay intentional or accidental?

I did look into aluminum oxidation more and the guys always going for a fine shine experience the worst or it. Mostly because they fight the dulling and pitting until they have nothing left.

How is your engine going these days? I know you were trying to track down some gremlins.

The handbrake scare pissed me off so I haven't done anything but start it every week. I need to wrap up the carbs. I think I have a stuck needle or bad float level. Pretty sure too high of fuel pressure caused it. I was fighting a lean condition now it gets rich randomly. Happened right after I bumped up the pressure. Bought some rebuild kits just need to stop procrastinating. And I don't want to get rid of my pop and bang "tune" yet. Lmao
