Guess it makes more sense to put my future work in a build thread vs. an intro thread!

My little 82 is getting a nice mechanical refresh. We're not in Kansas... er... California anymore...

I don't have much free time in the next week, but I'll probably start with the headlight kit first since I need to get the grill sorted anyway. The 4WD grill doesn't fit as well as I hoped and I gotta figure out what McGyvering I need to do, so that whole front fascia will get fixed at once. Then probably the headers/muffler, then intake stuff later. I'll try to take some before/after photos and videos of the look and sound as we go along. Wish me luck.

I've been pulled over by CHP that told me to pop my hood, kicked my tires, and said "what else can we find wrong".

Not sayin ACAB, but it only takes one.

Well a friend and I had a few beers and decided to get to work Saturday. Got the old exhaust off, albeit with some curiosity. Some mismatched studs that came out almost by hand were certainly strange. After that we called it an afternoon. Yesterday I realized I might have mis-ordered some parts from LCE, but regardless I decided to go full desmog instead of the halfway plan I had before. so I started ripping out anything with a vacuum line. Started getting sketchy about stuff that smelled like fuel because I don't know what I'm doing so also left it as you see for the night, lol.

This is my third vehicle so I guess there isn't much of a sense of urgency yet.
    Cheers

Just from personal experience, mismatched studs probably means the truck's PO lost some studs due to vibration. I lost a few nuts AND studs (I think they came out as a unit, together) due to vibration when I messed around with a header for my 20R in my Celica. I ended up replacing them with bolts but it's better to use studs in aluminum.

Be careful when installing your new header to torque down the nuts and watch them for a few hundred miles to make sure they stay put. I even used high temp RTV to lock the exhaust manifold nuts.

Welp, many months and beers later, humpty dumpty is back together again. after a trip to the mechanic to tune the carb and ensure I hadn't created a fire hazard (lol) it's running as good as new. Aside from earlier today when the throttle linkage disconnected from the throttle and the engine tried to redline itself to death in traffic. Story for another day, nothing that a roadside ziptie didn't take care of. Next up is general engine bay tidiness, dealing with all the excess wiring created from removing 10,000 sensors, a pressure wash, maybe a matching valve cover... and finding the proper plastic clippy bits to affix the grill so I don't have to use more zipties, haha.

Any suggestions on the interior? Wondering if I should leave it all blue to match the engine bay, or add some more black accents. That passenger door card should be really fun to take off, given that my grandfather had drilled in the window crank at some point. I assume any and all parts outside the engine bay are unobtanium. ugh

Nothing like replying a full year later... but I haven't done any night driving yet. Not even sure if they are aligned properly tbh. Will report back once I actually know, haha.

It's hard to tell but if those are K&N type cotton gauze filters (air and breather), they should be oiled. Spray each pleat with K&N filter oil.

    Nice job.

Hoping to have this look in the next month or so. Roll bar will be tough and expensive to source or build, but decided to just keep the wheels I already got and throw some 225 T/As on it. Here's to hoping the torsion bars won't give me nightmares like half the other folks here, and will have to play around with block kits and new shocks for the rear once the new tires are fitted. Still on the fence about plasti-dipping the wheels, but I guess if I hate it, I can just peel it off. and if I love it, can do something more permanent. Or not. This isn't a show car!

Engine bay tidied up with a billet loom and some new wiring. About halfway there. Still need to replace connectors for the terminals and the driver side of the engine, all the ignition stuff.
