Hello all, I own a 1974 RN22, all original and bone stock, with 174,000 actual miles. I bought about five years ago from family member of original owner. Originally bought to transport my bikes, and use as an occasional daily driver. it had some issues, a very deteriorated windscreen seal allowing rain to come in around the edges (have replaced the seal since), the worst was a flooding issue, which still remained after rebuilding the carbie. I suspect it was actually being caused by carbie heating up from the exhaust manifold having corroded through the area below the intake manifold, as I replaced the phenolic spacer below the carbie, and the carbie still gets very hot after driving a few miles. But before I could find the time to investigate the issue further, I floated the valves on my way home from work one evening. Apparently, my truck is only able to handle a max of 70ish mph. I was on the Interstate running around 75 to 80 mph, and without a tach, hard to judge the RPMs. It suddenly rattled, and the engine quit. After having it towed to the house, I checked the timing marks, but everything still lined up as it should. But there are 5 valves that are open, leaving only valve float as a possibility. The truck has been sitting since then, as I have other vehicles to drive. So I happened across this site, and have renewed my interest in fixing up my truck. I have been gathering bits and pieces over the past four years that the truck has been sitting, but time is an issue, as I am only home on weekends. I drive a truck for Toyota Tsusho Group, for their trucking company, TLD Logistics, hauling body stampings from plants in Bardstown, KY and Jackson, TN to their Tundra and Tacoma assembly plant in San Antonio, TX every week. So it's a challenge to find time to get things done when I'm only home two days on the weekends. Hopefully, some of you guys can help me find some of the items I need to find so I can finish my Toyota. I have a couple of other J-tin I'm working on that also demands my time as well as a couple of old J-bikes that I'm restoring too. I have enough projects to keep me busy well into retirement! Too many actually! but I'll get to them all eventually. I'll post some pics in the gallery. Later, Christopher
Yeah, just a bit! Since the head carked it, I've decided to go through the engine, blueprint it, mod it slightly. I got a complete engine kit from PAW, with .040 over pistons, .010 under bearings. Need to source a good mild performance cam, lightweight retainers, stronger dual springs, and stainless valves. I would like to either put a 45 DCOE Weber sidedraft or a pair of Keihin sidedrafts on it, too. I've got an MSD 6A ignition setup I had on an old BMW Bavaria a long time ago, figured I would use it with a Pertronix and a good performance coil. I originally wasn't planning on doing a lot to this truck. But, I guess I just can't leave my vehicles alone, everything I own is modded to some degree, go figure! Cheers, Christopher
