So I picked up some Crown Vic mesh wheels this weekend and they're in pretty good shape for the most part but the clear is comin off on a few spots so I'm gonna polish them! What's the best polish?? Just a few I've seen on some other fourms Meguiars NXT All Metal Polysh Mothers Autosol And whatever else someone can recommend!!
I have a personal preference to Mother's aluminum polish. I used the actual paste with a high speed drill.... here are some before and after shots.
There's one I used before that came in the form of a soaked cloth rope you cut in segments and rub the wheels down..worked very well... it was a little black container. forgot the name though :-/
I think I know what your talking about. I've used that same stuff on chrome to remove surface rust while polishing to a nice shine.
Yeah, Never Dull and the stuff in the black can I can't seam to remember what it's called. Aluminum foil and water work well on chrome too for surface rust.
I like Flitz. In the end though, I think it is just a matter of elbow grease. They will all eventually get aluminum to a mirror-polish.
The tears of young virgins! I've found that the red tub of rubbing compound seems to work well. especially if its a wheel that hasn't been polished before or has a lot of dulling. a good polisher helps as well to help with the "elbow grease" part of it.
I like the Meguiars NXT all metal polish, I've used it on aluminum and stainless, it works well. I also like the Mothers stuff. It really comes down to how much effort you want to put out, I use the red power ball polishing ball when I can, otherwise my arms are usually wore out before I'm done.
It's really more about how much work you are willing to put in than the actual product. I've used a lot of different products over the years. They all work well, if you are willing to do what's required to make them work. Which now that I reread this, seems kinda obvious. I'll go away now....
Well, then how about techniques? Tools you guys favor, the process... I'm looking to do the lip of my cv mesh wheels...someday, lol.
Let's see..... coarse, medium, fine steel wool. Then 1000 grit to 1500 or 2000 grit sand paper. Then the aluminum and mag paste polish. With some good olé elbow grease and a microfiber towel.
I've used the above mentioned rubbing compound and a good polisher with a buffing pad to do the heavy work. It beats wearing your fingers to nubs. The sand paper would probably be faster but having a polisher do the work for you is easier on the arms. I knew a guy, before the Mothers polishing ball thing came out that swore by old t-shirts or sweatshirts, zip-tied to a small nerf football, which was attached to a drill. He ran a long carraige bolt through the end of the ball until it was recessed into the foam and tightened the drills chuck around the other (threaded part) of the bolt. he then put the t-shirts/material around the football and zip-tied it tight near the chuck.
Got 2 wheels sanded to be polished over the weekend. The one thing I hate doing the most in all my projects that I do is wet sanding!!
