It finally came time to swap headlights so went with the conversion. What wattage bulbs are you guys running. I was thinking of getting the 90/100w as I live on a very curvy back road and need the brightest I can get. I see a wire harness that is available for these bulbs. Is the harness all I need to go with it? I really don't see having ceramic plugs keeping the wires from melting. Unless its the plug itself that melts. Anyway, do I need to swap relays and fuses also? I think the stock lights are only 35w or 55w. I just don't want to burn my truck to the ground just for a lil brighter light.
I have ran 90/100s in a few gens of Toyota truck without any problems. The eBay ones are pretty bright but don't last long. Few months to a year. Luckily they're like 5 bucks. As for wiring, there shouldn't be any required. I just swap housings.
On my 88 I run Hella lens with DDM's HID bulbs & ballast, which has a single bulb with low /high beams, went with 55 watt & 6000. Had them in for 4 or 5 years now ,great light & no problems!
Bump to that!! HID's or nothing at all. I'm kinda obsessed with HID's and LED lights. I'm running 6k's in my truck. Love them I think they are brighter than the 8k's cuz the 8k's are blue and don't seam to light up as much as the 6's. I had the 8k's in a Titan a had and they were ok but in my opinion the 6's are the best.
It all depends on budget. You can get H4 conversions with bulbs in eBay for around $20. I've had cheap low/high HID kits. They work okay, but I prefer the simplicity of H4 bulbs. They use more power but oh well. As for LED bulbs, keep them to the rest of the truck. I've seen the Cree LED H4 bulbs but am skeptical about the output they can give. Although the Cree LED light bars have massive output. Ill probably get a set of LED H4s after the holidays to test them out. If they are weak, ill run them as my inner low beam bulbs. 78 and older had 4 headlights.
Well, I got my headlight assemblies and bulbs today. I just went with regular H4 bulbs for now. HID just not in the budget with holiday coming up. I got the Phillips version of the silverstar zxe bulb. Looks pretty good. I do have an issue with this setup. !right be easy fix, tho. But it seem like the bulb mounts upside down in the housing. Or the lens is upside down. When I switch to high beam, it seem to point down on ground instead of higher than lows. Anyone heard of this issue before? I'm going to flip the headlight housings to see if it cures it. Just odd, cuz I have the 'top' of the lenses, on top. Other than this lil mishap, the lights look and work waaaaay better than stock halogens.
I paid $26.89 for mine with Free Shipping on ebay from a US Seller. They included the H4 Bulbs and i have had them for 6 months and they work great... Mine are made of Glass not plastic or lexan I removed the blue accent bulb and put clear ones just in case i want to use it as parking lights.. 7X6 CRYSTAL H4 BULBS HEADLIGHTS HEAD LAMPS UNIVERSAL H6054 Here is the link: 7x6 Headlights
Odd to have upside down bulbs. Maybe the h4 socket was cut upside down or the lens glued on upside down. Flipping them should fix it up.
Can't figure out how to post pics. But they are real close to the ones Jewish guy posted. But instead of the lil blue light, mine has white LEDs on the sides like the new camaros. and there wasn't an issue with them after all. it was still a lil daylight when I first checked them, but after driving home from work tonight, they are fine. the high beam just isn't focused on a spot in the distance like my wife's car. it's more spread out, if that makes sense. I can see further in the distance than the old ones, and they light up the ditches on both sides way better. and thats a big plus for me since I live in the country and see deer just about every night. I am very happy with this upgrade. Now I have way more options of bulbs. Should have done this years ago.
Finally figured out how to post photos. These are the headlights I went with. The LED's are brighter than I thought they would be. hooked those up today.
Sorry its kinda a crappy pic. For some reason when you click on the pic it also shows the above pic posted before mine. I have the other lights posted on the fist page. I wished I would have stayed with the projector headlights I had before cuz it made the HID's even better. But I love HID's. Never had LED headlights. Show us a pic of them.
Wow am I special. Should have read your post a little better. Your running normal H4 bulbs sorry. Thought you had LED headlights. I've seen them but only in the 7 inch round headlights. Boy I ramble.
Huh very interesting. I don't think I would pay that much for headlights though. Good thing eBay is around.
Or true, proper headlight upgrades in terms of getting projectors so you can deliver HID lighting correctly. What'd I do? buy $30 ebay 7x6" housings and put some Morimoto FX-R 3.0 3" Projectors in them with 35w 5000Kelvin bulbs that are a pure white. The cutoff is sharp and the lumens delivered are beautiful and show me the road. I don't have the eye fatigue of blue lighting, halogen lighting, or cheap plug n play HID's in reflectors that blind and glare other drivers, causing an unsafe road condition. Sure, my setup cost me $300. (I got the Stage III kit for $270, 25% off on Thanksgiving.) But it was worth every damn penny. Granted, I had as much space as I wanted to install these damn things. TheRetrofitSource.com has all the information on a true HID Projector headlight retrofit system. They're releasing a 7" round headlight system, hopefully a 7x6" to come. The FX-R is great, but even the Morimoto Minis are SUPER easy to retrofit. They're compact (the FX-R is compact in its own nature) and deliver GREAT amount of lighting. The Morimoto minis are affordable, too. In an informal way of speaking, my FX-R's come with clear lens. The pure white cuts through with the sharp cut off beam pattern. I make Acura TSX's look like bitches when it comes to lighting. (remember how everyone praised Honda for the TSX and S2000 projectors? They're nothing compared to my lights). Start here. Bargain Basement from The Retrofit Source Inc As far as I know, JoeyNational and myself are the two ToyotaMinis forum members that are running projectors. Happy retrofitting. It's probably one of the best upgrades I've done to my truck, it's next to doing my manual swap. I had fun doing it, I love it because I learned a lot from it and it enhanced every bit of my driving experience at night. I absolutely love driving at night, now. Nothing compares to the light output that I'm giving myself (and others, especially when I pull up to Civic's with tacky blue HID's in factory reflector headlights). If anything, check out junkyards for pairs of quality HID projector headlights in other passenger cars. Most Lexus cars have them, Acura's, Audi's, etc etc etc if you want to get into your personal budget build.
