ok so i bought some property about a year ago and it had a toyota pick up on it thats been abandoned. im just now getting around to it. the truck didnt have a battery in it so i just bought one yesterday. i dropped the tank to make sure there wasnt any old gas, which there was so i drained the tank, added new fuel and now i want to see if i can get the truck to even turn over. i checked the oil was a tad burnt so i just did a cold oil change. checked the radiator no rust. pulled the air filter off clean as a whistle and same with the carb. now theres just one problem. i dont have the keys to it... and i tried going to the dealership and they said that they need the registration. well the last time the truck was registered was 8 years ago. so the truck has fallen out of the dmv system. and i dont want to go through the headache of registering it and having an inspector come out and check the vehicle blah blah blah if the truck ends up not running for any unknown reason. also i called a local locksmith and he also wants to charge me 200 bucks to make a key for it. is there any way i could possibly try to get the truck running without a key? hot wire etc etc. its a 1982 lifted yota single cab short bed 4x4. inline 4. i dont know the type of engine just that its an inline 4. any help would be greatly apprecaited. thanks.:help:
Run down to your parts store. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...=Search_03701_1277153_1278&pt=03701&ppt=C0329
Old Toyota keys are fairly universal. Try to get somebody else to let you try that key. It i may have just the part for you. I had an 80 parts truck an the column key was shot so the previous owner put a universal one on the dash and wired it to the column harness. Plugs right under the dash. I can dig it out and snap a pic this week for ya. I'm pretty sure I know where it's at. Or you could copy the same concept.
sweet, thanks a lot guys i think ill just buy a factory replacement ignition lock cylinder from oriellys tomorrow. really appreciate it!!
well i pulled the steering column apart and got it to start right up with a few tricks that i found out for myself. lol idle fluctuates between 800-1200 every so often, clutch either needs to be replaced or adjusted im not sure yet but it shifts into gear but its very soft. also releases within about an inch from the bottom. would love some input on what you guys think it is. and then also where i may be able to find some sterring column parts.. haha
I have a complete column from a 78 if you need anything from it. I'm saving it for a rat rod, and won't need the key or blinker setup anyways. Just the column. I've got spare parts for some of the internals too.
well all i broke was the alluminum casing that holds the ignition lock cylider because i had to unluck the steering. know anywhere i can get an oem part for that or would i have to find a used one? any ideas on if the clutch issue is the clutch itself or could it be slave/master cylinder issue? and do you think that the idle fluctuation is just from a vacuum leak possibly or any ideas?
it would be number 5 on this diagram ill try to post a picture tomorrow of it if you need me too its what the ignition lock slides into on the column
