Spent part of this evening installing new front shocks hoping to fix a clunking sound I've had in the front end. While the truck rides much better, the clunk is still there. I believe I've narrowed it down to a worn link, but I can't order a replacement part until I know what it's called. It's shown below circled in red. I went with a pair of Summit Racing's brand sport front shocks. Once I get the rear shocks I'll go ahead & do the ball joint flip & lower the truck all around. I've only had the truck for just over a month & I'm still sorting out some neglected issues. I changed the plugs, wires, cap & rotor last weekend and installed a new positive battery terminal as the old one was corroded badly & left me with some sketchy starts. Thanks in advance for the help. -Todd
I think its the idler arm.. if its mounted to the frame on the right side of the pic then it is forsure. is this on the driver or passenger side?
The photo is from the passenger side. Is there one on the driver's side also? If so I'm going to go ahead & replace both. I could feel some play in the one pictured. You can see where the grease has seeped out from under the boot on the fitting on the right. There's a ton of new construction going on in my neighborhood so the underside of the truck is pretty filthy. I normally like a super clean undercarriage. It makes finding trouble spots easier.
Thanks guys. Placed an order with Rock Auto last night and again tonight. Having 3 Toyotas approaching 200,000 miles each is getting expensive all of a sudden. Son's 98 4Runner is due for a timing belt, wife's 01 Land Cruiser needs CV boots & valve cover gaskets and the Hilux needs a timing chain among other things.
pitman arm is the one bolted to the steering box. Idler arm is on the passenger side bolted to the frame.
Toyota Pickup 2WD 1988, Moog Suspension Parts. Here's a link to Moog Brand parts, should be a page for your year truck.
Fred. That part definitely looks like it would be named Fred. If you put a mustache on it I would say Larry or Bill, but without it, I would say Fred. If you want to get all "Year specific" you could check the popular baby names for the year your truck was made. If you wanna be region-specific, I would say Namiko or Tomaharu.
