I'm looking at a local pickup w/ V6 and manual tranny. I was originally hoping for a 22RE truck... but this V6 truck is clean.

Any regrets from those of you who bought V6 trucks?

You will regret working on it. Cylinder heads are a pita to do.

It's a bit more of a mess to work on with all the top end layout stuff but not too bad.

i currently have one... v6, 5 speed. not bad. its allota bad hype some people cried about it. once you peel all the intake stuff off its the same as a 5vz. and they are not that hard to work on.

im getting around 22-25 mpg average on mine now. i placed a simple ebay intake on it to get rid of the stupid stock cluster**** one, and a good flowing catback. now it runs pretty good uncorked.

Gotta agree . The v6 isn't a bad motor . When well taken care of it will give a Long service like any motor ever built they all have there quirks and faults .. If the truck has has a clean body and interior
I would buy it regardless of its power train . A few improvements of aftermarket support can have you a strong running six

    yup.

main plans for this motor will include balanced injectors, and maybe headers down the road to get rid of the ass backwards reverse flow exhaust manifolds. given the catback system, and the straighter shot intake system, this is all the motor really needs to breathe and make a noticeable gain in power and fuel economy.

And while you do the valve cover gaskets and have the upper intake off, lightly port it and remove the texture. Gasket match it at the lower intake flange, I think the gasket had bigger ports. Do the lower half of the intake if you feel adventurous. That should help some mid range power and response.

My neighbor drives a v6 92 4runner, he beats the **** out of that motor to hell and back, forgetting oil changes for like 10-15k miles and it still runs like a champ.

OldSkool......I wanted to know the exact same thing when I bought my yota. It was clean and only had a little over 100k on the speedo. I read all the threads about how awful this motor was but for the price that I got the truck at I was willing to take that chance. I too installed a cheap intake and catback exhaust which made a great difference power wise. It is currently in my shop getting Doug Thorley headers and some misc. maintenance done on it.

I would say if it is clean and you get it for a good deal than take the chance. I would suggest opening up the intake and exhaust and possibly headers as this is what will illeviate the dreaded head gasket issues.
