My friend really wants to build a Toyota motor.. He's never built one, he has built many others mainly Datsun and Chevy, and we are both pretty clueless of what special things can be done..

What is there that you can do to a 20R with a decent budget, nothing like a turbo setup or supercharger? Other then the basic porting and cam and header and carb 22r block etc.. Is there a flat top piston for them? Is there a stroker kit?

What have y'all done to get them ponies up there?:headbang:

lc engineering will show you a list of goodies that can go into the 20R. from there you can figure out what you can do affordable to your motor........ but for the price, displacement, and parts available, you should consider a 22r build instead.

I'm trying to stay away from a 22r, simply because I was given a 20r block and am already having it bored .020 over and buying pistons for it..

20r had a flat top piston. The hot combo is using an 81-84 22r block. Has domed pistons. Raises compression to about 10:1. The basics like carb, intake porting and header still apply. But a 20 can make real nice power. The smaller piston likes to rev a bit higher I think.

I know about the 22r block with a 20r head, built 2 of them so far.. I was just wondering if anyone has done anything special to the bottom end to make it more power, without boring it a lot or switching blocks.

I'll probably have the flywheel lightened as much as possible, make it have even better acceleration;) and port the intake and buy a header.. Already have a weber, but maybe try to find a dual plane intake..

I'm pretty sure you can bore the 20r block far enough to use 22r stock pistons.

Then I would do sidedrafts. That's basically all the easy power your gunna get.

Exactly. I have heard of a good machine shop boring all the way to 22R piston size. I have my stocks still if you need a set. I have to inspect them to make sure they are still in good shape.

I didn't do anything special for the bottom end of my 22r. New oil pump, stock dual timing chain (81/82 was dual, 83/84 was single), moly rings was about the only mod. New crank and rod bearings. Plastigauged it all to spec. Nothing special really.

I know alot can be gained in the stock intake. I've done a few and see wonderful midrange response and overall power increase. I can explain more on what I've done if ya care. Have pics too. While mine is off I'm gonna make a few changes to the water crossover plate and delete it.

The ignition getting good ngk plugs and performance wires helps big time. And get a higher voltage coil. Stock igniter can be replaced with an MSD 6a box but I've never done that. That's the plan when the igniter fails. Or I put a v8 in. Whichever comes first lol.

The flywheel has a big ring on the backside that can be machined off. Some of the face can be slimmed overall. Won't be as light as an aftermarket lightweight but shouldn't cost much. I've never done it because mine is on its last surface face cut anyways so Ill worry about that if the clutch goes out down the road.

Aluminum rocker arms from a late model 22RE helps with rev speed and stability at the top end. I had cast irons on the hybrid and swapped during a rebuild and noticed a small improvement. Whole assembly swaps right over.

Im not boring it that big.. My machinist says I would probably have overheating issues, hes done them before, he says its a toss up if you will or not.

Im really looking for everything that will help make power, other then the displacement.

I would love to know what you have done to your intake, especially if you have pics!
What will happen when you delete the water crossover under the intake?

I got my block back, bored .020 over and got the pistons and rings to match.. Im still needing to get a crank and rods, hopefully soon!

When i get a head I'm gonna gasket match and smooth the intake side, possibly lighten the flywheel if my budget is fat enough, and maybe buy a header. I already have a weber..

What kind of power do you think this setup will make? I'm guessing about 130hp. I know a lightened flywheel doesn't help hp, but it does get you movin faster..

I'm also looking into ways to free up some power.

How much of a difference did the weber make?

When I did mine it did A LOT of difference. I went from a stock untuned carb, to a weber and deleted egr stuff while I was at it and it looks good and performs even better. I get 8mpg better then my last truck(same motor, tranny and gearing) and feel more power.

I highly suggest swapping to a weber. It cleans up the engine bay, and The manual secondary is nice when racing... I mean... getting on freeways:lol:

Think there was few guys on here that did get webers to pass smog .. Now on the visual I'm sure you'd have to hide it under a stock air box and falsely hook up all original hoses .. Think there was a guy that did this recently

There's a 50 state legal weber available. Costs a bit more.
