I've got a 2wd 3.73, 7.5" 3rd member and would like to upgrade to a 4.10 8" 3rd member. Is it possible to take one out of a 4wd rear end and put it in my housing? I also need two replacement axles. If i cant find any good ones in the junk yard where can i get a set? Thanks.
So the whole 4wd rear end with 2wd axles is all i need, great thanks. Im located in Rhode Island also. Why cant you use an F code rear housing?
i know that if u have the 8 inch housing u can use 4wd 3rd members you can tell its the same if it has one long stud on one side....if u wanted to find 410s for the 7.5 rear end u can use the front end gearz off a independent 4wd.
^^^^ this is true. the front gears off the 4x4 are 7.5. on a side note....(sorry dont mean to thread jack) but ive been doing some reading up on axles n sizes -it says my truck has a W55 manual trans. n 7.5 rear end. from what i could find, every where is saying the W55 stopped in '88, yet my truck is a 94. (trans code sticker on door jam) ...so i was thinking that aren't they suppose to be a W56 or soomething in my truck?
... according to drivetrain.com -my truck should have a w56 -but after reading the sticker n doing some research - its saying i have the w55 (the celica trans.) ...suppose to be faster/wider ratios?
if im not mistakin only the 4wd trans are w56 i could be wrong tho because they all have the same basic parts i also heard od guys converting the w56 4wd trans into a 2wd trans.
yes. i believe the "JT..." japanese model trucks came equipped with the w56 for more low end torque cuz the trucks were a little heavier than the "4T..." american made counter parts -which were suppose to be a little lighter, hence the W55 trans was used. this is what i determined from much research and talking to a few other friends with the japanese model pickups.
I'd love to see step by step pictures of the third member swap process. I've got a 4.300 8" 1-ton rear. I'd love to have a 3.900 or 3.73 to give me a little more speed and economy, but I'd want to be sure I could get the job done and get back on the road in an afternoon.
