I recently got myself a good and beat up pickup, I am a mechanical engineering student and my goal is to make this sucker get over 100 mpg as well as look nice. I have since lowered it to stock, thrown on some better wheels and tires, new tie rods, brakes and rotors and in the process of reupholstering the entire interior. Running into a problem though, i just took it to get smogged which it miserably failed due to none of the emissions controls stuff being hooked up properly. Almost all of the vacuum lines were disconnected or just hooked up to the wrong components. I have also found that I am missing the "VCV" or "Vacuum Control Valve", napa, Kragen or Autozone not to mention any of the salvage yards I have gone to seem to have it. Is there another place I can check or a way around using it? Thanks, glad to be aboard.

Welcome! I'm up in the Bay Area, CA.

Can you get a part number for this VCV? I can contact my sources.

    Pablo,
I have a 78 as well and am familiar with the emissions pic you posted. However, on my truck, the sticker on the underside of the hood does not show the VCV that mounts to the valve cover. I was having issues with the vacumm system when I first got the truck until I discovered the sticker and then replaced all lines and routed in accordance with the sticker. Problem fixed. I am not sure why that pic in the manual has it routed as such but I am sure someone else here on TM probably knows. I would take it off unless the California tree huger emissions folks have you by the sack...
I used to be stationed in CA so I know first hand how they can be (although that was 10 years ago!)

    cheers and welcome to TM!!!

I will try and find that out, thanks.

I wonder if mine isn't a california model and never had it to begin with, the diagram under my hood is completely toast, but I will run the vin and check. Thanks

I think you can usually tell if your truck is a CA Model or not, because it'll say on the VIN Plate about it being CA Emissions Approved or not. Oh and welcome to TM!

I found out that it is a california model, and I got vacuum system hooked up correctly and it runs way better, still don't have that VCV valve though. I am thinking I can borrow the one from my neighbors truck to get it smogged then run a setup from a non california model without the valve until I can find one, so if anyone has a vacuum diagram from a 78 I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks

    Pablo,
I pieced some interesting things together when looking for another emisions vacumm control valve part (not the same as yours). I searched ebay for VCV and all other variations and found one. Toyota used a lot of the same parts for multiple applications and it cost me like 10$. I will get my emisions factory book out in a while and post some pics that might help your cause. Also, I think I have that component that you are looking for but I am fixing to retire and get back to my 26 acres in rural TN, where that part is sitting in a box somewhere. If you can wait till the middle of July, just hit me up here and I will start looking for it. I am fairly certain I know where it is but I gotta get the wife and kids set up before I start tinkering again!!! If so, I will just give it to you...Let me know... TN doesnt hug trees for a vehicle that old..

    cheers!

Uh.... The books are packed up as well! Sorry brother, I will look at the site when I am settled and if it seems you are unresolved with the issue, which I doubt, I will hook it up. Moving is such a beeeeeaaaaaatch! Thank god its the last one I will ever have to experience!!! 25 years of this cr@p and it gets old!!!

    cheers!

Thanks awesome, thanks very much to both of you, I really hope to get the truck done before july, but in any case hope your move goes smoothly.
