So I got my engine back together and almost put back in the truck. Now I cant get the engine and transmission back together. Is there a trick to doing this? should it just slide back together? I left the transmission in the truck, should I pull it and assemble the two outside the truck and install as one?

assembly out side of the truck is best. you have to line up your clutch.

^^what he said..hardest part is getting the angle right on the input shaft on the tranny to into the clutch..put a jack under your tranny it will help get the angle right with the engine

I have done it both ways and having the extra equipment helps during the installation.
A jack holding the gearbox up helps out by holding it up. If you don't want to struggle just pull the gearbox out, assemble them outside and put them in at the same time.

I just had my 20R rebuilt and I pulled the trany and engine together so I didn't have to wrestle with it like you are experiencing. It went back together like sliced bread and butter. Installing it in the engine bay with the trany connected is a bit tight but easily doable, just have to watch the clearance at the firewall and the front of the engine bay... Good luck, I would pull the tranny, its easier than wrestling underneith!!!

    cheers!

You can also slide the gearbox back as much as it will go. then set the motor down on the engine mounts, bolt it down. now slide the gearbox forward. you can place a 2x4 in between the gearbox and jack. just get underneath and slide it into place, making minimal height adjustments to the jack.
the jack will do all the lifting and all you have to do is slide it forward into place, then just start bolting it up.

As long as you get the angles close, you can wiggle and rock the motor and get it to slide right together, Never had any problems

Just keep working it back and forth and use the bolts to help pull it in.

Thanks for the help everyone. I got in in without removing the transmission. I got real close yesterday and just used the bolts to pull it together.
