did you loosen the pulley hold down bold (center of the pulley) before moving the adjuster bolt (above)?

On the 22RE engine the alternator belt is adjusted by loosening the alternator pivot bolt and the bolt that holds the alternator to the bracket on top with the long slot in it - the alternator pivots and adjusts its tension this way. I use a jack handle to push the alternator away from the engine to tension the belt.
Be careful not to short the power connection bolt to ground.

Just read your post again and see what you are asking! - the A/C belt pulley center nut needs to be loosened so that you can loosen the bolt that pulls the pulley along in its slot.

my bad, im tracking now. i think my alternator is bad, ive already ran through two new batteries since this past weekend. it seems as if it charges at first, but then craps out on me later. ive done the alt test by removing a terminal with the truck running, and everything is fine, however just this evening, it cuts out when i repeat the test. my belt is pretty worn and it squeals...hopefully when i replace the alt and belt tomorrow, it fixes the problem. anyone come across the same issue?
