a friend of a friend of mine has a 5m motor he wants to sell me and the price is too right at $250 complete w/ecu. but what else am i going to need to make this swapwork? is the transmission going to bolt up (stock 86 auto)? wiring harnes (i'm guessing i need this or does the 22r harness bare any resemblance to the 5m?) gonna buy the motor asap and start the work maybe end of summer, so i will need much help with this project.
I am doing the same thing soon. I want my 22R for my 80 4x4 and have all the parts laying in the shop. The only thing I havent looked into yet is the drive shaft but that an easy fix. Get LSD. you going from a 90hp to 160 if you dont upgrade anything
i suppose this will all come down to the availability of a wiring harness and transmission then. dude put a 7m in his supra and has 2 5ms just layin around... i know 22r's go for good money though... hmmm.
Just from what i've READ, the 5m is a front sump and the 7m is a rear sump...So u would need the the oil pan from a 7m. BUT it could need some notching to clear the 2wd stuff. A lot of 4wd drive guys have write ups on the 5/7m swap and they usually have some kind of lift, so the oil pan is no issue. The intake manifold hitting the brake booster is another problem area, but i don't think the clearance is a HUGE issue, u could probably get away with a little hammer work? Been researching the 7m swap for my '86 2wd for a while and it seems pretty straight forward, but its been suggested to get a running parts car to disect the wiring from... then make sure it starts before tearing the drivetrain out. I'm no expert, i will cross this bridge sometime in my life. A 5/7m powered 2wd truck would be NICE!
at this point i am not sure if i want to do this or go 3vze or 2rz or 3rz... the old supras are readily available on craigslist in my area running and parting out. but i am concerned about a lot of other issues i would run into. but then toyota truck stuff disapears faster than the human eye can blink and its pricy as hell. for now i will just try to stay focused on making my 91 a driver and not so much a shop paperweight.
