I picked up a 22r out of a truck made in July 84. I'll be slowly rebuilding it for my 94' EFI truck. I see on the lc engineering site that they have a 81-84 head, and then a 85-95 head. How can i figure out if the motor i have is the early or later version. Not sure what month Toyota decided to switch to being considered a 85 that year. Just need to make sure it's the right head before I drop it of to have it redone!
Find the plug cast on later model 22R engine blocks. According to Ice Engineering's Tech FAQs, there is a cast, bow-tie shaped plug just before the oil pan rail, below the middle freeze plug on the driver's side of the engine. This presence of this plug indicates a 1985 to 1995 22R/22RE "Laser Block." Earlier 22R engines do not have this feature.
Round.... ****! Well at least now i know how to tell em apart. Next question. Is the short block compatible with the newer style head?
This question is got me at a standstill? I see that there are different part numbers for the rebuild kits. But do the older shortblock work with the newer head, and existing EFI system in my 94'?
"In 1985- the 22RE had a major change. The block was taller and the head shorter, compared to the earlier models. The engines' blocks and heads are not interchangeable (for practical and cost purpose). " 22R Tech Notes
