Alright I know its been awhile but im back and in need of your guys infinite knowledge. So my 91 toyota truck (22r-e) keeps randomly cutting the throttle. I'll drive it for days and it will be fine, then out of nowhere it bogs and the throttle cuts. The fuel pump seems to be fine because the exhaust reaks of raw gas when this occurs. At first you would think of a few things right? First thing I thought was the MAF sensor, I tested the tolerances on it and they were beyond the specified limits. So I replaced that. After a few days the problem happens again. So naturally you think "when I hit the gas and it bogs down or shuts off maybe the ecu is not getting the correct position of the throttle" So I test the TPS and one of the tolerances was skewed so I then replaced that. Then all seems fine... Until! It happens again. This time I was low on gas and thought that might have been the culprit. (20 year old truck, may think the gas gauge float isnt as accurate as it was 2 decades ago) Not the case. Key points: -Happens at random times -If the truck sits for awhile it will normally run fine -MAF, TPS are replaced -No vacuum leaks present -Fuel pump is fine -Has spark -Will happen whether cold or at operating temp If anyone can point me in a general direction that would be wonderful and I would really appreciate the help. Thankyou
fuel issue My friend is having the same problem as we speak. When you run your tank close to empty you will pick up the **** that is sitting at the bottom of your 20 year old gas tank. There could also be some water in there. Try running it pretty low and drain out the gas thru the drain plug on the tank and inspect it. If its looks fine my next guess would be the fuel pump. A sure sign of your fuel pump going out is when it works sometimes and not at others. I've had to bang on the gas tank to get an old fuel pump to kick on and it would run fine for a while then it would act up again. Just a couple of suggestions.
well I jumped the pins on the diagnostic port next to the fuse box, the fuel pump turned on just fine. Then I opened up the cold start injector fitting, disconnected the coil and had my friend turn it over and the fuel pressure was fine (good surge of pressure, the **** went everywhere). I had 1/2 a tank of fuel when this happened. I didnt know there was a drain on our tanks lol. I already like that it's plastic.
Fuel injectors and fuel filter are often left alone because they are hard to get to for changing/cleaning. They could easily be clogging up on an old truck. You might try running fuel injector cleaner or sea foam.
You can have the injectors ultrasonically cleaned and flowed. I could rule that out for you, I can service yours or do a set for you to swap out. I also offer $10 off to Toyotaminis members. I would also check the circut opening relay and make sure it's ok. If it's intermitent it will cut your fuel and shut off the fuel pump.
I totally would go with you if you were in IL lol. That service u offer is pretty cool and I appreciate the offer. Where is the circuit opening relay?
I can do a set and you can send me your cores after you recieve them, that way your not down very long. The circut opening relay is above the ECU it the passenger side kick panel. You may have to remove the passenger side speaker to get to it.
