Hey everyone. I'm kinda new to the Toyota forum and I just wanted to ask everyone something to see what kind of help I can get. My fiancee's dad has a 94 Toyota pickup 2.4 automatic that I'm wanting as a project. I've been wanting it for the past couple of years and he has finally givin me a price on it. Thing is though it has been sittin up for the past few years. He said it had a blown headgasket when he stopped drivin it. It has about 50000 on it. The question I have is how hard would it be to get this thing back to runnin in tip top condition. He said I can have it for 400 dollars and I know I could have a new or used motor put in for not to much but I want to try to save the one that's in it now. So I just need a little help figurin out what all I may need. I know I need the headgasket. Probably clean the fuel tank out a tune up stuff like that. But what may be some things else I may need to do. I just want to get it running good without sinking a lot of money in it just yet because I'm wanting to bag it also. Any kind of help for me.to get this thing running is appreciated.thanks
depends how long he let that motor sit. When it blew, what did he do to it? I wonder what the crank's oil condition is like. If there's no water in there, then you can get by, but then I'd be concerned about the cylinders. How bad was the BHG? Keep us updated, I want to see this thing get back on the road. I have a 94 also. and only 50,000 miles? that's shortlived!
Ok ill keep yall informed. I don't know all the info on it yet. If I have to ill put a new motor in it but I want to try to save this one. If someone else had the truck I wouldn't want it but bein that its my fiancee's dad I don't think he would lie about it. And 400 is a deal cause its in good condition. I'll stay in touch tho.
Post up some photos of it and the underhood shots. I say if your gonna do a headgasket I would do a timing chain w/metel backed guides and add a cam and drive it. If you can built what you can while you have it apart.
Honestly it depends on how bad the gasket is blown, as Nam mentioned if there is water in the block then you will want to probably tear the bottom end apart, hone the cylinders and deck the block and get new piston rings as long as the cylinder walls are not scarred or anything else due to overheating. Hopefully the head is fine and it didnt overheat enough to warp it or cause any valves to bend. I would def tear it down to see unless your girls dad can tell you how long he drove it after thinking it blew versus when he parked it and how bad it blew. I dont know about your mechanical abilites but most online companies sell FULL rebuild kits for $400 and as long as the head is good then Id have the block machined (decked and honed) and you'll be set for another 300,000 miles no worries. Either way $400 is an absolute STEAL, good luck
You should definitely have your injectors cleaned and flowed, (insert shameless plug here)! Injectors have a tendency to gum up after sitting for long periods of time.
Everything they said. $400, you have got to take it! And at only 50,000 with a BHG for $400, it's worth it's weight in gold, that is when you get to the engine and freshen her up. A 22RE with such low miles and a BHG is completely fixable. Don't lose hope, man.

Ok guys I feel kinda stupid now haha. The first time I looked at the truck I didn't notice it didn't have the 1/10 mile on odometer. I look at it yesterday and realized it actually had 292000 on it. Yea stupid right. I still plan on getting the truck for 400 and baggin It but now idk if I should try to fix the headgasket still,rebuild it or what. I was also lookin into buying one from 22reperformance.com and swapin them. Whatcha think?
rebuild it man, that motor is going to need everything replaced though. I wouldnt just do headgasket and drive because it wont last long. the bearings are probably all very close to being gone. where are you located ? looking forward to some pics !
Located in meridian Mississippi. The truck was last registered in 07 so been sittin 4 to 5 yrs. No rust tho body is straight paint faded tho. Just a project for a while. I've had a bagged ranger I bought already bagged a few yrs ago but it was a hack job so now.I want to build.one of my own thanks for.the comments.keep them comin.
Good luck with getting your new truck up and running. Here is a picture to inspire you, you should print it off and hang it up in your garage for motivation, shoot for the stars man! You said you want to bag it, I highly recomend having it body dropped to the rocker (stock floor), because I guarantee you once its bagged, you will want it lower, just get it all done at once and be done with it! Truck is a 94 just like yours, almost positive from it's Japan and won Mini Truck of the year a few years back. She don't get much better than this, gives a new meaning to the word clean, damn near perfect! Good luck man, hope this makes your day!

Any pics of your truck? What color? get to autozone or Wal mart, buy a bottle of Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. go to costco/sam's club/ or some other place where you can buy a pack of microfiber towels for cheap. Fold them in hamburger style 3 times, and go buff up that paint by hand. You'll see progress, FAST. It'll have instructions on that bottle.
Gone try to get some pics soon. Just gotta find time to get home before dark to take some. The truck is a real dark green. There are some spots on it that can be buffed out like the bed and sides maybe. But the hood and roof the clear is already peeling
My truck was sitting behind my father in laws garage for a couple of years - had the timing chain worn through the case into the water pump cavity, he said if I fix it I can have it, replaced the timing chain and case cleaned out the mayonnaise from the sump, connected up new battery it started first key! Its my daily driver now. Ian
