Hey guys, i am currently planning on putting a chevy 350 into my build project, but i had an idea that may allow me to do two swaps and only have to pay for one and keep the wife happy. I have a 2000 gmc sierra 4.8, and i was thinking about swapping it to a 6.0 and doing an iron block ls2 build, and thought "maybe" i could just put the 4.8 into the yota instead of buying a 350. Have any of you seen someone drop an LS based motor into an 84-88?
i got rid of the 22r last year or the year before, i like the toyota engines for sure, but its getting a v8 and dropping in a engine i will already have will be way cheaper than getting a sweet tundra 5.7.
im just a fan of any swap keeping it true to what it is....1uz, 7mg, 2jz, just my thing... if not just keep it stock with mild hop ups..... If i wanted chevy stuff i would drive a chevy... Just my thing but I do feel ya chevy or ford swaps are ALOT cheaper
Toyota through & through! Chevy is less money than building a Toyota or Ford engine ,& a lot more available! A LT1 would be way cool ,but I live in Calif. & keeping all Toyota & a 4 banger is very cool also!!
Well i do have great respect for those who keep it true, but after dropping 15k+ into an acura because i had to keep it true, really effected me. I have the toyota because it has sentimental values to me, but because i have 3 projects going on at once and i'm a full time student, i have to budget myself if i want to get these done. Yes, i am going with the chevy swap because it is cheap, parts are cheap and very abundant, now i may drop the 4.8 in it and hate it after a while, and once i'm in the clear on the other projects, come across a good deal on a toyota v8 or lexus sc400 swap and drop it in, but for now its also beneficial because i can do two swaps for the price of one by using the chevy motor. If i regret it later you can say "i told you so", but for now this looks like the 4.8 is gonna go in.
Where did you come up with this? It is to many varibles in that statement for example you can buy a LS9 crate engine which is chevy for over 22 thousand dollars.
You will not regret it. When you install the engine and transmission you will have the future options of installing anything from a 5.3 all the way up to 500 cubic inches.

You are taking what he said and blowing it out of proportion. You can buy the equivalent Chevy motor to most any Ford motor for less than the Ford. You can also buy PARTS for that motor for less than the Ford would run for parts. Sure you can buy an LS9 all aluminum built to **** motor from the factory for 22k, you can also buy a built to **** 427 crate motor from Ford and run the bill up even higher. These guys are OBVIOUSLY talking either Junkyard motors, or slightly used motors. On average, for hobby builders, Chevy is cheaper over all. Barret, let me know when you look at doing the yota swap, i'd like to get an eye on what's involved.
The point I was making was the statement about chevy being cheaper is bogus. You speak of junk yards you can buy an ls7 chevy from a salvage yard for 8-15 thousand used. When you provide information to others in order for them to make an informed decesion it should be factual and non bias. I love toyota, ford chevy dodge engines etc. but each one has its place for engine swaps. I am not tring to start a war but I can tell you that I have been running an ls series engine for about 7 plus years in a toyota as a daily driver with better gas mileage and 4 times the horsepower. Prior to that I have had plenty of other small block powered toyotas. The key is I am speaking from experience not hear say or a web search.
ok, i have looked local yards and because the new style tundra is still too new, its hard to find a 5.7 engine. There are a TON of chevy/gmc 2500s, escalades, etc out there in the last ten years with the 6.0 LQ4 and LQ9 engines, i can get that motor at almost any yard for $1000 with about 50-80k miles on it, and on local craigslist ad's for as little as $500. So i'm not talking about the aluminum LS2 but an iron block build. Right now i can't find a beefy toyota swap for that unless i hunt down an SC400 engine which i'm sure i can. And Grant, do you still live around here, i know a while back you was trying to move away.
oh i will, you can find them in my Build thread link in my signature. Actually found a 6.0 on craigslist this evening for $500, but gonna wait a little before i get one.
