Ive been reading "side draft" alot on this site and was wondering what exactly that meant... i figured its just a side mounted horizontal air intake.... but does my '79 20R have a side draft carb? and if it does how do i go about putting velocity stacks on it?
A side draft carb pulls air from the side straight through the intake into the engine. Most carbs pull air from above the engine then it turns 90* to go into the engine. Those are known as downdraft carbs.
your truck does not have it. unless previous owner put it on. they look like ITB's.. heres a picture of my truck with side drafts.
ive got a downdraft carb with a bulky air filter. what sidedraft carb would go on my 20r? what modifications would i have to do, if any?
i have a set of side drafts on my 20r and they are amazong u would need tp change the intake manifold and carbs with linkage.. its a totally different setup... very well worth it.
If your not going inside the motor, keep the carbs small (check the link below). according to edelbrock "you can over carb by as much as 150%, and still be in the corect range for your motor". That being said you will still have to tune for your application and geographical elevation. If you go through a reputable dealer they can assist you in setting up the proper jet and emulsification tube sizes. Also consider cold weather start ups. Other than that they are a blast to drive, they sound great to. Hope this helps............. 20R Weber 40mm Sidedraft Carburetor Kit
