Self intro: Hey everyone, I am new to this forum and to toyota. However I am not new to the car game. My name is Tanner, I am from Middleton Idaho and just interested in building something a little different. Starting point: So my base is an all stock 1993 standard cab short bed, 22re 5 speed, 2wd completly stock I actually saved it from the crusher picked it up for real cheap. Why I have been throwing many ideas up in my head on the best build for this truck, I have considered everything from stock restoration to notched and body dropped to prerunner, However I have seen alot of all those. So I desided to build an auto crossing drifting every day driver... The plan Okay so I am undesided on the engine yet, I may go with a supra 1jz, or build and boost the 22re, or ls1 with a t56. not sure just yet but everything else I am sure of, Its going to get the independent rear suspention from a 94-99 ford thunderbird so I can keep the 5x4.5, its goin to get a set of xxr 522's 18.9, a fresh coat of white paint, The frame is going to go panther pink as well as the wheels. Those are the big major upgrades and changes im sure there will be more on the way. I am really excited and looking forward to this build it will take some time to finish it but it will be very worth it and I dont think there is one like it around hear anyway.
Sweet another Idaho guy.. Me and Nvrenuf are in Boise. You ever need help or something hit me up. Also everyone is going to have their opinions on what swap to do and such but if you are going to use it for autoX/Drifting in Boise and surrounding area then honestly the 22re with a few upgrades will get you by nicely, along with the rearend you plan on doing. Im building 2 engines a 22ret for my mini and a full built with ITB's 22re with LSD rear for my autoX. The 7mgte or 1jz will not do you anything with the short autox courses we have there is a guy in town with one and he cant get it to spool at all on our courses. For drifting or hillclimbs that would be another subject. Welcome to TM
Hey cool man i really appreciate that you will prolly be hearing from me, pm me your number bro, and i have a feeling the 22re will get intake and exhaust for awhile. with blocks and djm uppers...
Time to go to the car wash!!!! That chevy have over 300k on it with and its completly original!! before After fast track car wash is the ****!!! ITS CLEAN!!!
Good start. A clean working surface is always great. I agree. A mild built 22re is the way to go. If you shop around and spend wisely you will be in good shape for autoX.
As with all builds I always say go CORRECT the first time. LCE has the top of the line stuff and they know what they are talking about if you ask questions. Ive found seldom few places for performance parts that beat LCE for quality and service standards. Or go cheap and get ebay! no egay for me lol, I learned my leason the hard way, the way lce has everything set up is really nice and they are not terribly high on price. most the stuff i need I am goin to build turbo mani, exhaust, all the suspention fab, but i cant go building a cam haha, thanks for all the positive feed back everyone! nice to see a forum with decent people.
lol how about suspension now? you want your arms and all, but go ahead and upgrade the sway bar, the trucks would love it. Lowering will help drop the center of gravity too! The rears, if you don't plan on going IRS yet, grab a rear sway bar. Lowering springs would be cool. Bump up damper stiffness on all four corners. Tires, I ran a 300treadwear traction A temperature A tire in the front during my autocross. It is only 205/40/16 (tiny) but it did grip damn well! What size tire are you looking at? Lower # on treadwear and higher traction will provide you a lot of feedback. I wish I had 215+/50/16's for my setup. autocross, I ran with 0 camber, and I think would've enjoyed about 2-3* of camber for the intense speeds and cornering g's. speaking of tires, I drove around with my friend's 265/35/18's on my truck two weeks ago and with 200 treadwear and amazing traction, I was taking corners at high g's and didn't hear a single bit of tire squeal, freaking awesome! even 245's would help our 2500-2900lb 2wd's.
I wouldn't count on a 22r/re on getting you around the track too quickly lol. Your going to be fighting for time based on suspension if you keep it with the 22 motor. Just my opinion. These are great, strong, reliable motors.....because they are slow lol
Road course, yeah it'd be nice to have more oomph. Suspension and tires. Go through this whole thing. The 22RE is going to get you far, take note most SCCA courses get most cars into the 2nd gear range. My truck with the auto only stayed in first (because that's all my power and 1st gear went to 51mph.). A 22re with a manual and 3.73's or 4.10's would be a monster on the autocross. Get off the finish line and get around the corners. You have a single cab, your shorter wheelbase would be a blessing. I was reading this last night. im making a coilover kit for these trucks i will have a set on my truck in a month, right now im running -1 camber and my truck ever under steers. when it was 0 camber it under steer all the time. now i over steer all the time. i have a supra rear sub frame for the truck.
When you put that sub frame in will you take extensive pics. I recently got a complete Supra rear end that I plan on putting in mine and would like to see how others do it.
wow, thank for that info guys thats awesome, and i actually just picked up a sway bar that i am goin to set up on the rear and blocks for now, and i also just pickep up some badass wheels and tires. wheels are enkie staggered 16x7 front and 16x9 rear tires 245x50 r16 i will post a pick mounted soon
