Can someone school me on the fuel sender setup on my 84 22R carb'd longbed? I have the bed removed and a leak in the seam of the tank,so tank needs replacement...no problem there...but fuel won't stay flowing and the tubes on the sender look like they will crumble at any second, not to mention i'll never get the screws out...looking to replace tank, fuel sender and float/level sender The problem is I can't seem to find a replacement fuel sender...keep finding repair parts for it,but no real info or full replacement... Anyone know where i can get one of these?Am i calling it by it's proper name?Looks just like the sending unit on electric-pump vehicles, but i'm sure there's no electric pump in there,as it's a mechanical on the block...
fuel pump? I'm a little confused. Your not getting fuel to your carb? It should have a mechanical fuel pump located on the front left side of your head But if you say your lines are really rusty and you're not getting a constant flow of fuel maybe there is a hole in the line somewhere that is cavitating the flow of fuel. You would need to crank the motor to get the flow going because the pump is driven by the cam shaft. I say go thru your lines, and tank and fix any leaks and try again. you can even test your pump by getting a regular tank with fuel and put a pick up line running directly from your fuel pump into the tank and it should suck it up no problem. Let me know maybe I misunderstood the problem.
Haven't tested the pump yet...What i was looking for was where to buy the assembly that sucks the fuel out of the tank...the round plate with 2 tubes on top of the tank,as i didn't think i could remove it....Well' i got it out yesterday using vise-grips on the screws...cleaned it up and looks like it may have a few pinholes in the supply tube, otherwise in good shape, so i doubt this is the problem with staying running...but i still wish i could find a new one...i changed the fuel filter, which was full of sludge, probably original equipment(i got the truck with 51,000 miles on it)... Gonna try to seat the rubber fuel line further down the tube, over the pinholes and add another clamp, then test the pump...been having charge problems too,so testing has been a PITA,but i got a new alternator going in this morning,so that should help... this is similar to what i'm looking for:
i know u can use a 22re pickup but the fuel sending unit is seperate on an re so u need the whole tank assyl. just usea 22re setup jut remove the fuel pump in the tank/ pickup unit and no problem there mayby blowout the lines while the tank is out (remove of pump of course) to make sure of clear lines ????? or find a used setup in good condition idk juat throwing ideas out there
Must be a 'dealer part'...otherwise known as a 'cob-it-yourself' part... Now that i have it out, it doesn't look as bad as i thought,so i have 3 options: 1) Take the sender to a welding shop and have the pinholes brazed= probably about $10 plus $10 gas(I live in the middle of nowhere)... 2) Fix the holes myself using J-B Water Weld= about $8 plus $5 gas... 3) Slide the rubber hoses all the way up the nipples and clamp them tight=$0... Leaning toward #3 at this point...maybe by the time i get the new tank i'll have it brazed, but for now should be fine... New alt went in yesterday, along with another brake line...gonna paint the top of fuel sender and get that back in today (hopefully)...then i'll test the pump and bleed the brakes... Never park a truck in the grass for several months...this needed wheel bearings when i parked it,now it's a friggin project...sold my other truck and transferred plates 2 weeks ago...still can't drive it Appreciate the comments and suggestions...
Got her running yesterday...not sure which was the problem...seated the rubber fuel lines completely over the nipples...found heavy condensation on pick-up screen and cleaned/dried that...tested the fuel pump, good flow, shot about 18" in the air...tried to check the sight glass on float bowl, but couldn't see the level, still stalling out...i then unhooked coil wire and pumped the pedal while cranking for a minute or two...running pretty smooth now, must be that filled the float bowl? If anyone knows where i can get a new (or excellent used) pickup tube assembly, let me know...i'd like to replace it still...thanks... still trying to get pics off my camera to load onto this old POS windows 2000 computer
Battery wouldn't charge...boiled over...had a spare out back,so i put that in and charged several hours, still had to pour gas in carb to start...changed the plug wires, started and idled fine after that... Took a test drive and didn't get far...when i hit the gas,it sputters and dies...starts right back up and idles fine long as i don't give it gas... I'm thinking acceleration pump on the carb maybe?? Really should rebuild the carb, but i ran outta cash...sold the Ford to finance fixing the Yota, as well as the 87 Comanche(which has 'death wobble' over 45mph)...everything needed more than expected... So, i'd hate to rebuild the carb and still have same problem...am i missing something? Anyone familiar w/ these symptoms? Know anything else i should check first? Am i correct the fuel system is NOT pressurized? Meaning a hole in the fuel tank shouldn't affect how well it runs???
i had this problem also i had stuff cloged up in the feed line to my carb pull the hose of that connects to the carb check for debre or the inline it the pump sounds like its starving for fuel make sure to check all lines for debree or change filter again mayby it got cloged up my had exact same symtomes and it was just old pices of deterating hose inside the carb
while the truck is at idle push down on the accelerator pump and see if it does anything. Check your buterflys. Try covering the top with your hand and give it gas,Those old carbs are tricky.
