I just bought a 1983 pickup. It was cobbled together by the previous owner. It has a Celica 22r engine in it and I assume the original transmission but I'm not sure. At this point it's looking like I might have to eventually replace the transmission but I'm not sure what I should be looking for because I'm not sure what will fit the engine. Any way I can figure out what year Celica the engine is from? Thanks.

The bellhousing pattern is the same for all 20R/22R. since it's am '83 it's probably a W50, which came in both Trucks and Celicas. There's tons floating around so do a search for W50 and you should be good.

If it's out of an '83 Celica it's an early 22R. it'll have a double row timing chain and a slightly higher deck height, that's about it. You can find out if it's a later block only by the stamp on the side of the block on the bottom, looks like Saturn. If your block has that it's the later (85-95) 22R. there are other ways to ID the engine but that's all I can think of without tearing the engine apart.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. It's hard to figure what parts of my truck are from where/when.
