Hey all, I just put in a used A43D auto in my new 94 2wd. pics are posted in newbie thread. After repeated drives & adjusts I have it to where it will upshift on it's own into 2nd but 3rd & od require you let off the gas slightly. The factory adjustment diagram shows you line up the stop on the cable with the end of the rubber boot. That's way too tight, it wont shift past 2nd if you do that. I looked at another truck just like it and their cable had the stop way back in the boot past half way 3-4 threads showing on the cable housing to the back lock nut. I did mine there and after a few 1/4-1/8 turn adjustments it's shifting the best so far. Yet still if you don't let off the gas, it will never shift, at least not in the first 4000 rpm, which is as far as i take until i let off when testing. the used tranny looked clean in the pan and when it shifts during high rpm it shifts fast & hard. clutches seem great. with it adjusted now it shifts good but only if you lift off the pedal slightly, still giving throttle but just less. other adjustments had it shifting hard and only when completely off the throttle. if i tighten it, it makes it harder to shift (higher rpm), if i loosen it, it makes it shift worse too (too low rpm shifts). downshifts are perfect. Anyone know what could cause this issue? I've exhausted every known keyword on google searches and found nothing really.
i adjusted my cable "looser" which means it should downshift less sensitively. The A43D runs on that cable to read throttle position and the governor inside the tailshaft housing. When you tighten the cable, it'll read more throttle than it should, thinking it should be in a lower gear. you should loosen the cable so it reads less throttle than it does *now*, allowing it to upshift. I'm not a fan of my truck's auto for being such a primitive design, I've gotten used to just lifting up my foot a bit allowing her to upshift. I drive her in D mode, but the way I roll in my foot, people think she's a manual *lol* Usually i'll get by 1-2 with a smooth upshift without lifting my foot. I lift up my foot around 35mph to get her into O/D sometimes.
was the truck cold when you had shifting issues? for some reason those trans are real sensitive to engine temp and if your thermostat is sticking the friggin thing won't make it into OD and struggle to even get into third sometimes.
re auto trans fluid is 3 days new and perfect level, warm or cold it acts the same. just got back from driving it. it will shift on it's own i found but; 1-2 @ 25, 2-3 @ 50, 3-od @ 66. if i barely let off at shift point i get; 1-2 @ 25, 2-3 @ 37-40, 3-od @ 47-50, which feels normal. I may keep backing the cable off a tiny bit at a time and get a touch better but this is most likely as good as it will get. oh well, I'm getting used to it, it's a semi-automatic unless you want to race it. but with 272K I try to keep it under 4000 rpm.
engine temperature somewhat affects it. It's actually the fluid temp too. truck needs to be warm until the transmission turns on o/d it's REAL finnicky. I hate it. In winter, I'll be stuck with 3 gears and driving with the cold start loop. which means using more fuel until the transmission fluid warms up and she shifts into o/d.
