'93 V6 warm starting problem

    Hey

    My '93 Pickup doesn't like to start when left for a while.. Stop it then start again immediately it's fine, once it's cooled down completely it's fine but if it's try to start it after 1/2 hour or so it'll only just start, run roughly for a few seconds then die. First time I thought it was flooded and tried putting gas pedal to the floor (as when drying flooded plugs with a carb engine though it's EFI.. ??) and that eventually 'cleared' it, it slowly picked up then ran fine..

    Hasn't happened for a while but has just started again, but now flooring it doesn't seem to help though I have managed to get it going eventually both times..

    Other than that it runs fine other than a couple of occasions on cold mornings when it struggles a bit up the ski hill - though I'm wondering whether that's down to running gas low and picking up crap in the fuel lines..

    Wow no hey guys how yah doing I'm so and so? Darn rookies! This problem sounds very peculiar. I can say its not the best thing in the world to have less than quarter tank in the cold driving up hill you'll cause fuel starvation.

    My only excuse is that I'm English so p'raps a bit reserved!..

    Ok, so.. How are you chaps?!.. ha ha.. I'm Adam and I live in Golden, BC, Canada. I'm a carpenter and architectural designer, a mountain biker and a snowboarder..

    I have a '93 V6 Extended Pickup in Met. Green with 278k on it but looking better than most around here and it's called Norris..

    How's that?..

    Hadn't thought about fuel starvation - good point.. I'll keep him half full min. from now on..

    elo chap, when was the last time you replace your fuel filter? Definitely sounds like fuel starvation. Oooo and welcome to the forum mate (o never mind thats Australian)

    flooring it to clear flood is a function of the EFI computer called clear floor mode. if the accelerator is pressed 100% when the key is turned to "start" it will not open the fuel injectors. They deliberately make it work similarly to carburetors like that. And because you wouldn't be flooring it for other reason there and because it's the easiest way to not include extra single-use controls.

    As for actually fixing the problem I'd suspect leaking injectors or cold start injector. running rich rather than lean: mainly because flooring it (clear flood mode) helped. When you start it right away, they haven't leaked. when you start it after a long time the gas has leaked down into the crank case. when you restart it warm...~10 mins to an hour or two. the fuel has leaked and is still in the port causing it to be too rich on startup. It's only a problem for the first hour or few hours because that's how long it takes to bleed off the fuel pressure causing it to leak.

    Trouble getting up the hill could be the filter or picking up air depending on the angle and duration.

    Dude, that absolutely sounds like the problem - fits to a 'T'.. Thanks so much..

    Interesting to hear that the EFI is so cleverly designed..

    I'll take it to the garage, see what they say and go from there.. Always good to have an idea of the likely problem beforehand..
