So wondering if Supra Calipers would be an upgrade and give some style points too. I would be running the Starion wheels, So wondering if these calpers would work? Centric Parts 141.44152 Front Left Rebuilt Caliper With - eBay (item 150535707607 end time Jan-17-11 01:45:27 PST)
Is that a 4 piston caliper? I think the 4 Runner Calipers look better. They are a 4 piston & I think larger. What I run with a 12,19'' Wilwood rotor, way more stopping power & look great!
how large are the starions? i think you need a 16 inch rim to clear the 4 runner calipers. im not 100% but i think you need a 16 to clear the supra ones too...i could be wrong though
My Supra has 16s. For Supras a popular upgrade is the 4x4 truck calipers They have 4 pistons, 2 on each side of the caliper. The good ones are where all the pistons are the large size (v6 trucks). Some 4x4 calipers like that have a large and a small piston per caliper. They are a heavy caliper though. I believe the Supra has 2 pistons. And the turbo cars have the better stopping power usually. My 88 4x4 had 15 inch steel rims. I tried to fit 14's on my 88 Supra once and they didn't fit cuz of the brakes.
I would like to get a definitive idea here of what I could do to increase my stopping power, Like what would be the ultimate OEM or similar group of parts that would make a sick brake kit! Any ideas? The 4x4 Caliper ideas sound good... what else would a guy need?
In the write up for the 4runner calipers, dude said that the tires would lock up at 60mph or something. Tons of stopping power, I read. You would need access to a welder, a bit of metal and the 4wd caliper bolts and nuts. Then you could mock up your own adapter to hold the caliper in place. And bring that mock up into a machine shop and they could make you a solid strong piece of metal with the same pattern. I bought wilwood rotors and hats. It's all in the write up. There was even someone making the adapters on here. Not sure about it anymore. But I will be making my own.
LS400 calipers on ma truck spindle... Stopping power----Yea, slides the tires at any speed. At lower speeds, the truck goes "scootch" and throws you thru the windshild. Only problem, the twin 36mm pistons made the pedal a little lower, twin 44( or whatever the supra calipers are) will only make it worse (unless you upsize your master) And I have to run 16in wheels.
Raffaelli, Could you give some more details on your set up there? Did you have to fabricate some caliper mounting brackets? What rotors are you using? Thanks!
Look carefully at the first pic. The 95 LS400 caliper bolts to the spindle on the bottom hole. The upper hole (of the caliper bracket) needs to be moved down. Which involves welding up the bracket (to make it flat in that one spot), drilling it, then tapping it. The 95 LS400 rotor needs the center hole opened up enough so it can bolt to the back of the hub. Then CENTERED (important part), then bolted. Thats it. No brackets, adapters, nothing.
Ah! I see. Thanks for the info. Dang, so that '95 LS400 rotor is the right offset and everything? Just the center hole issue? Whaddya know!
Yup, even the LS400 brake hose bolts on to the truck without flaring, or any thing. Im sure the 96 and up (huge arse rotors and 4 piston calipers) Lexus LS's setup would bolt up the same. But those look like 17in wheel only setups, and are not commonly found in junkyards yet. (like an LS430 or LS460)
I have a 1998 LS400 parts car on the drive and the front rotors are currently sat in the back of my truck. I will be attempting to mount up the 4-pot calipers in the next few weeks as work & the Irish weather allow. I'll be sure to let you guys know how it goes.
The Lexus LS400 uses 2 piston calipers from 90-94. The bigger 4 piston is the LS400 95-2000. The picture above it the 94 and older calipers which is a 2 piston. If using the 95+ you have to run some kind of wheel spacer in order for the rim to clear the caliper. 95-2000 caliper: Big Brakes and 4 Piston Calipers - Club Lexus Forums 2001+ LS430 caliper (note how it mounts): New LS430 Calipers pics.. - Club Lexus Forums James
Ok. There you go. Im certain the rotor size changed (before they went 4 piston), too. And there are two sizes of 2 pistons calipers.
