So I recently got what I think to be a very good deal. I have been wanting to build up a high po 22r for a while and I just got my chance. An old hotrodder friend of mine was cleaning out his basement and found boxes containing a complete 22r fuel injected motor. I guess him and his buddy took it out of his 85' tore it down to rebuild it, cleaned it up bought new gaskets and then his buddy went and bought a complete motor from salvage instead. They put the salvage motor in the truck and the original has been sitting in boxes in his basement ever since. 50 bucks and I had to pick it up, came with a homemade engine stand too! He said the reason they took it out to begin with was because the #3 spark plug was getting dirty, no knocks, no leaks just a dirty #3 plug. Since it's all in pieces I want to build it up right to make some serious power. Where should I start and what are my best options?
edit: im a retard and just saw it was an injected motor. well i would convert it over to carb cause its easier to make power with the carb. the stock computer is real picky and will have to be modified or completly replaced. Then after a carb, you could do the basics, bigger cam, port and polish head, bigger valves, header, high compression pistons, stroker kit..blah blah blah how much do you wanna spend?
I don't want to spend too much. I was thinking no more than 2000 bucks. So what are my best options with that cap in mind. I already have carburetors kicking around somewhere.
It says you have an 83. What are the stats on that engine??? A tall deck 22R is a little easier to build good power with than a 84 and later block...
what kind of carbs (plural!?)? The key to a good 22r (or any motor really) is the head. It makes no difference how many CFM your intake can flow if your head is not up to the task. It doesn't matter how many revs your bottom end can take, if your valve train and cam choice are mis-matched. First there's a big question, the answer to which will determine several factors.... What do you want to do with the truck?
i'd dew a "HYBRID" on that badboi. short block with sum "JE drop in PISTON'S".port and polished 20r head with sum LCE or SNIDER v-spring's,a 292 web cam or LCE cam,sum dual carb's MIKUNI'S or WEBER'S wat ever werk's for you,an ACT six or street and strip clutch pack on an aluminum/lighten fly wheel,an ignition box "MSD or MALLORY" AND SUM GUD OL HEADER'S "LCE,HOOKER,DOUG'S,or even HEADMAN HEADER'S" tone it down with a 2 1/2 tubing to a 2 1/2 inlet of a HOOKER MAXFLOW muffler. DONT FOR GET TO POST AND KEEP US UP DATED WITH THE BUILD
My 4x4 '83 has the stock 22r but it is bored .030 over and I am running a weber DGAS38/38 on it with a hedman header and a glasspacked straight pipe. It will burn the 31's right off but the clutch just went and the tranny is pretty well shot and the motor has a light tick in the top end and my rear diff is super sloppy I want to build up this other motor and possibly swap it into my 83, or find a 2wd truck and make a zippy ice slalom racer/ rally truck type thing... maybe a lowrider... maybe Mostly I just want to get some engine building experience since I have never done it before. Once the motor is built I'll figure out what to do with it
I have one complete working condition stock carburetor for a '83 22r and one stock carb for the same truck that needs a rebuild. Also as I mentioned above I am currently running a Weber on my '83. I would like to build something that can handle higher revs. I mean I understand the basics of how an engine works (more air in and faster air out + ample fuel = more power) I just need to know things like: What is a good head to use what is a good valve train/ cam combo stuff like that.
