hey guys i need help asap. I was putting my the cylinder heads back in, and i got to the bearing caps. The bolts on the #1 cap on the pass side head stripped out. Like the threads literally came off on to the bolt. So i cant put in that cap so for now i SOL on the progress. Im tryin to figure out what i can do to solve this issue, Helicoils? tap new threads for a bigger bolt? Whats the best solution?? Help me out asap guys i wana get this fukkin thing running!!
I'm pretty sure what he's talking about is the caps that hold the camshafts to the head and not the main caps. Although tig welding close, redrilling, and retapping to correct size is another option
Well i just put the heads back on the truck and i really DO NOT wana take it back off. I cant tig, so thats outta the question.
I think Kekaha is correct in it being a cam cap and not a main bearing cap, if you have the room to drill to the next size plus room for the bolt head thats an option just to drill it out and rethread, if not a heli-coil would be best. If it was a main bearing cap,,,, I don't think I would want to tig weld a block and rethread unless I planned on having the block linebored afterwards because of heat distortion.
yea i was at Dazes' house and just replied without logging off his account. lol. but yea it is the camshaft bearing cap. i honestly have never tapped a threads before and i really dnt wana mess sh!t up. But i couldnt find any helicoils in the proper size. Thread pitch yes, but actual width of the bolt i saw nothing. I just didnt get a chance to go to pepboys tho.
Go to a automotive store and bring the factory bolt, get the correct helicoil kit, by the correct drill bit and tap required if not supplied, measure your hole depth with a smaller drill bit, tape that depth on your new drill bit, drill the hole, spay with air, tap, spray with air, apply thread lock to outer helicoil treads, install helicoil, let dry, then install your orignal bolt. This should take about five minutes.
