Okay lately my truck seems to be idling at a higher rpm, I have no tach so cant tell. It may have always done this but for some reason ive noticed it lately. Even after its warmed up itll still do, itll go down when i engage the clutch and take off but if im sitting still its just sounds like its idling to high. How can i figure out which screw i turn to adjust the idle?

if you didnt change anything you shouldnt need to adjust it.

id look for vacuum actuated secondarys on your carb, but its old enuff they should be mechanical.

i would have a assitant start the motor while you watch the carb linkage. do this with the motor warm so the assistant doesnt have to press the gas to start. look for the linkage moving (opening) when the motor catches.

this could be a tired return spring as well, the vaccum from the motor is artificially opening the throttle plates, pulling them.

    to answer your question...

follow the throttle linkage to the carb. where it connects should be the primary cam. on that cam should be a screw with a spring around it that has a striker/stopper that is part of the carb housing, not on a linkage piece. the screw will not go into the carb at all.

you prolly have 2 screws like that, one is for the idle speed, the other is for the fast idle speed.

no matter what you do, keep track of how many turns you do go. just in case you screw something up you can put it back to how it was. and use methodical steps, dont try to fix it in one go.

Look at the throttle lever on the carb, where the linkage connects from the foot pedal, the one you move back and forth to open the carb, it should have a screw somewhere that contacts the lever to adjust the idle speed, thats the one you adjust.

Look for a vacuum leak, spray carb clean safely all over your motor, if the idle raises over 200 rpm you have a leak, check gasket areas, vacuum hoses, manifold, smog equipment if you have any.

    1. someone was setting the timing and plugged the vacuum line and forgot to unplug and reattach it, 2. the vacuum advance diaphram is shot, leaks vacuum so instead of fixing it they pulled the line and plugged it, 3. someone told them the screw added more horsepower :D

I got a quick question and sorry to thread jack.
For all of you with 22REs what do you guys idle at? Mines seems to idle a little under 1K. Is that normal? When i first start up, its at like 1500, then after drops down to around 1K/slightly under. Is that perfectly normal? Ive read before that it idles low but can anyone confirm this? Thanks

If you have a dual diaphram vacuum canister on the distributor its still possible one leaks and the other doesn't, they are seperate diaphrams.

Sounds perfectly normal, when cold it runs faster same as a choked carb does on a NA engine, once warmed up the idle drops to around 800 rpm which is normal.

Its not vaccum lines. I finally got to messing with it and not sure how to explain this, the metal flap deal that usually moves was stuck in the wide open position, I think the flap itself is whats messed up cause i had a hard time closing it. Think im just gonna use this as an excuse to get me weber and maybe take care of some other minor things. Anyone know if there any real problem with the stock fuel pumps that came on these? mine went bad i assume so the guy put an electric one on but i was just gonna order a new stock one and install it.

if your gonna go to a weber, keep the aftermarket pump.

i dont trust stock pumps. but then again im used to dealing with 30+ year old pumps.

I had my carb rebuilt locally for like $100 I think.... ( can't remember exactly )
I found a guy in the metroplex that works with old carbs and he knocked it out.

When I found out the price on a Weber, I decided to rebuild...
