i have heard that you can directly bolt on 84 and newer control arms and front end to a 79 truck. is this possible? if so does anyone know how much and wht it takes? thx for the imput.
you can install the newer lower control arms, but they are like a half inch longer. or you can modify the 79-83 lower control arm to accept the later ball joint, and bolt on the spindle. are you planning to lower or bag your truck? just wondering why you want to change them.
Will this work on a 73? I want disc brakes, Im looking into 75-later 70s front suspension now... not looking to lower my truck either so.
ive personally looked up quite a bit about how to put the 84 up spindles onto a 78. basically if you have the lower part of the spindle drilled out and taper sleeves installed from the other direction it should work. in the style change, the reaimed the balljoint from up to down. or vice versa. other than that the spindle geometry looks the same. the 75-82 discs suck. theyre small and non vented. later style was vented rotors. and if you use 95ish 4runner 4 piston calipers its a nice setup. supra rotors can be modified to fit if you arent using 14s as well. i plan to figure out some sort of combo of those items.
U will need upper and lower arms, spindles, hubs, bushings, brakes, control rods, and ball joints. I did the entire swap on my 82 (same suspension as yours). The lower and upper arms bolt in, same with the spindle. Use the 79 torsion bar arm (the outer bolt holes will not line up, so bolt the one that will go in, and drill out the other one and bolt it) There is a length differance in the lower control arms. So the upper will have to be shimmed in about 1/2 to 9/16s of an inch. I think it tucks the wheels a smidge, but idk for certain. It works great and doesnt have any wierd problems, and now I can get drop spindles and LCA's for my early model. edit- I get a perfect factory alignment reading on mine too. BooYa!
