I had an issue similar with a '74 Plymouth and it turned out to be a balast resister for the coil. I know some old Toyotas have these things. I think I have one on my '77 but not sure if you would on a '72. It's usually a pretty cheap part.

I actually havent had a ballast resistor on this truck at all and its ran fine. Spoke with a MSD rep and they gave me a few things to try. Im guna try to mess with it again tonight

You wouldn't want one on the msd anyway. Quicker coil failure may result with the stock system but you would get a hotter spark.

After messing with this damn thing for a month it FINALLY FIRED UP!

I pulled 22R dizzy and swapped the new pickup coil to the 20R dizzy i had removed a while back and stabbed that bitch in the motor and after moving it a bit it turned right on like nothing ever happened.

See I knew you would figure this out. now you will be able to test that 22RC distributor and find out where the failure point is so that you and correct it and have a usable spare.

it was not something as simple as the ground wire from the plate to the side of that distributor was it?

Alright so i have the truck at a point where it will start and run. Hit it with the timing light and the Timing mark on the crank pulley is way off to the left, not sure if thats advanced or retarted, anyway, i think it may be because the vacumm advance may be stuck in a advanced position.

now i just need to remount the MSD box and il be able to drive it again. Il definitely be taking it out this weekend at some point to see what it does

    Heres a couple pics

Took the truck to work today and i have to say something still isnt right. Pretty sure its a carb issue, cold start aint right. Guna try to mess with it this weekend.

So you did finally get the timing set correctly?

Incorrect timing will affect it and the issue will seem like a fuel issue. Make sure that no water is in the bottom of your float bowl of your carburetor.

@74RN22 The timing seems like its still a little off but i think it may be due to the vacumm advance on the dizzy not functioning properly.

i actually messed with it a little yesterday then cruised around with some friends and made some more adjustments and it seems to be running better. Choke still needs a bit more tweaking to get the cold start right.

Finally purchased some new shocks for the front of the truck. The shocks that were in it were trashed when I put them in. Theyre cheapies from rockauto, didnt wana spend too much since i know they're guna get blown out away... theyre almost completely compressed. The front end feels so much better! Used to have that old cadillac floatiness up front.

Lower mounts on the old shocks were bent. I know i had lost one of the bolts on the freeway a few weeks back. Not sure why the other tab is bent
