Well all summer cars are back in my "storage" garage, so I finally had a space to pull the 91 back into the "shop" garage today. It was in the barn and I wanted to get it into the garage before snow made it impossible (bald tires, one wheel drive, no bed (light as can be). This weekend I will be prepping the garage for swapping the newer 22RE into this chassis and then doing the timing chain and all of the EGR deletes I bought.

Finally dug into this, during this warmer than usual weekend.

Taking advantage of the nicer weather I started replacing the engine that is in the white truck(bent valve) with the other 22RE I bought.

As soon as I verify the newer engine is OK, I am stripping the truck of:
    • engine
    • all engine bay electronics
    • trans
    • complete wire harness (to clean out the stuff not needed later)
    • ECU
    • Gas tank
    • rear end
    • and anything else I could possibly use in the '78.
Since once it is stipped I will send it to the junk yard, I figured I would make more room to pull an engine out and in and out again. Enter the sawzall.

I cut everything out of the front center of the truck. I also removed the fenders (wiring goes into the inner fender, and I am planning on not cutting any wiring to remove the harness).

Looks fun! I guess just take your time, take lots of pics and label EVERYTHING so it goes back together smoothly. Good luck!

Thank you. I have labeled most everything with the engine, but I will label every single thing that connects to the ECU.

I picked up stuff for the oil change tonight and am taking a break.

The white truck had an O2 code. Someone thought it was in the rear harness, but when the engine was pulled the real issue was found. When the clutch was changed that harness (rear light and O2) was pinched between the block and the trans. Bolted right together, but with an O2 wire in between... I will be replacing that wire and who knows what else. I do plan on simplifying the harness so it is JUST engine/ecu related stuff.

Something I just thought of you may consider.

Always told myself if I ever do an engine swap or extensive work on my 22re, I'm installing an oil filter relocation kit. Dunno what genius designer decided to place it how it is, but I've seen someone with a relocation kit and it just made so much sense.

    Thanks.

Tonight I got the "other" 22RE is back in the white truck. Tomorrow, I will get everything hooked back up and hope to start it up and verify things are OK.

    22RE #2 runs like a champ.

Now to pull everything out and label it like crazy. :drunk:

    Thanks.

Once the wiring is out I plan on laying it out on my barn wooden floor and eliminating everything that is not necessary. When I get the wiring out I will connect each and every part that it has on it, so I will know whats a light bulb and such. I will label everything else I cannot connect with. I do plan on pulling the dash harness as well since I know the 78 does not have enough switched connections at the key cylinder. I am fortunate enough to have electrical knowledge, plus many spools of wiring and plenty of relays.

I am sure I will have lots of notes and plan to make up a wiring diagram for the swap stuff. :waytogo:

I removed and labeled the harnesses today, all with out cutting a thing. Tomorrow I will pull the fuel tank harness and start putting all of the other parts so I can get rid of the truck (whats left of it).

    Left to pull:

    Finished stripping the truck today.

Put some heat on the steering box drag link and it came off. Then got the gas tank out without any drama.

Great project. Funny to see all the New Mexico like the custom Zia symbol stuff on a classic Toy in NY. Thats a long haul for a little old truck. NM is my stomping grounds and not surprised someone stole something there. haha

Thanks. It came with a dream catcher hanging from the mirror too. Also has New Mexico magnet on the glove box and the bumper stickers seen below:
