Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows what the name of switch that controls the blower speed is actually called? Is it the fan speed switch or heater blower speed switch?? All the other positions work (II, III & IIII, execpt the I position) & also is it hard to replace it?? Thanks in advance for any HELP...
Huh! The #1 position on my switch burned out (a long time ago) too. I wonder if that is a common problem with these trucks. I can't really help except to say that I did buy a used replacement panel from ebay a few years ago but haven't installed it yet. I can tell swapping the panel is going to be a royal PITA because of the cables that need to be connected to the vent dampers and the heater control valve in the engine compartment. I'll check to see if the blower speed controller is easy to replace when I get home...
@MrDinkleman, Thanks. I think it may be a common problem, I also have seen the cables you mentioned but I hope you don't need to replace all of that.. I'll also search the web for any info on this issue.. Thanks again..
As far as I know that switch is part of the entire heater control assembly, which isn't to awful bad to replace. I had to on my 89 4runner and it took about an hour total. I still havnt found where the last cable connects, as all cables were undone before I started..
Thanks, but unfortunately, I do have to replace the panel. The temperature control slider on the panel popped apart and the fan speed controller seems loose in the panel in my truck.
For those with faulty blower switch positions....the likely cause is the blower motor resistor......they run about $15-20 at a Stealership. P/N for an 89 truck is 81138-89103 (3 speed fan) or 87138-89105 (4 speed fan) Hope this helps some of ya!
@SloPoke, I was just about to mention that.. I searched on google & I believe you are correct.. It doesn't seem to much of a hassle to replace either.. Thanks for the response, guy's..
They can be a PITA to get to...located inside the firewall up behind the blower motor somewhere. Some are low and some are higher up.....not sure if it's a Japan vs USA made thing that makes them in different locations or what. I just know they are not all in the same place.
Thanks everyone for the info.. Going to get started on that later today.. You guy's are a great help..
Update: it was the blower resistor.. A little tough to get to, but it is all good now.. Thanks for all the info..
Been a long time since this thread was active, but can anyone show a pic of the locations that its usually at?
Just changed mines for the past 25 yrs I’ve been having 3rd and 4th fan speed...and now all my speeds are working and now it’s colder air I have too on low
